I don't post around here but this thread had my head spinning.

So I looked up Dork in the dictionary and it said see “jerk.”
So, I looked up Jerk,…

Jerk: : an annoyingly stupid or foolish person b: an unlikable person; especially : one who is cruel, rude, or small-minded

The question remains: Are you a Dork? Cripes, how would a Dork ever become aware of their station in life especially if, by definition, the person in question is a small minded, stupid or foolish person?

The task of recognizing yourself as a Dork is often complicated by the tendency of Dorks to befriend other Dorks. In these circles Dork-like behavior is often mislabeled among their Dork colleagues as normal behavior. It might be fair to say then that if you consider yourself to be a normal person of normal behavior that you are most likely a Dork. If you have come to think that you are normal, it is most likely the case that NONE of your friends has ever come up to you and told you that you are in fact, a Dork. It follows then that your friends, having not recognized your behavior as that of a Dork, are a pack of Dorks as well.

It only stands to reason then that if your friends HAVE recognized you as a Dork, you are, in most cases, not a Dork and neither are your friends. In simple terms, if you have been called a Dork, you are probably not one. In contrast, if you have never been called a Dork, it is likely that you are one and are surrounded by the same.

In my dictionary, the first synonym for dork is nerd. Evidently dork is from 1967 whereas nerd is from 1951.

I went to an engineering school in the 60's, where we perfected nerd. Yes, before even the pocket protector, we identified nerds (and maybe, just maybe, I'm including myself in this) by the badge of wearing their slide rule in a case attached to their belts.
