Books - for some odd reason - seem to be a popular auction item... so, I'm donating another set of five gently loved tomes sure to be of interest to the members of Absolute Write.

This auction will be a quickie, ladies and gentlemen. I'm only going to run it 'til Friday night, 8pm, CDT.

The collection consists of:

1. Characters & Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card (Writers Digest Books)
2. Just Open a Vein by William Brohaugh (Writers Digest Books)
3. The 38 Most Common Fiction Writing Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them) by Jack Bickham (Writers Digest Books)
4. Everyday Life in the 1800s by Marc McCutcheon (Writers Digest Books)

and, the one book every single one of us should read:

5. The Street-Smart Writer by -tada!- our very own Jenna Glatzer and Daniel Steven

As usual, post your bids here in the thread! Starting bid for all five books is $10.00!

Bidder up!

Wow! Five books for ten bucks? Is this an auction or a yard sale? What an incredible deal!

Let me go ask my wife if we have any money. Be right back...

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-15-2006, 06:40 AM
Well? What'd she say? Did you tell her they were coming from one of her favorite authors? :D

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-15-2006, 06:41 AM
And I bet, if we sweet talk her, Jenna'd even send an autographed book plate to go with hers... maybe? Huh? Y'think? If we said... uh... pretty please? With sugar and chocolate and all her nummy favorite things on top? :D

Silver King
11-15-2006, 06:53 AM
She said I can go up to twenty clams. She was eating linguini with clam sauce when she said this, and at first I thought she misspoke.

The bookplate from Jenna is a GREAT bonus.

Now all I gotta do is find a way for her to let me bid on these awesome pictures! (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46474)

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-15-2006, 06:56 AM
I'll get to work on Jenna... :)

Silver King
11-15-2006, 08:29 AM
Oh, and she said I ought to bid those twenty littlenecks right off the bat.

Now I dare anyone to raise that tidy sum of mollusks...oysters excluded.;)

JennaGlatzer
11-15-2006, 09:14 AM
I love you guys.

And of course! I'd be glad to do a signed bookplate for the winner.

Thank you, Jenna! We love you, too! And Mac. And Chunky and Fahim and Dawno and everyone else who contributes to AW by dollar or by deed.

And speakin' o' dollars, Dino, darlin', you've been... um... outbid. You better go plead your case to Mrs. Silver King!

Do I hear $22? Who'll gimme $22?

Silver King
11-16-2006, 12:34 AM
My Silver Queen said I can go up to $22.00, but that I was starting to push my luck. She hinted that a foot massage from me might be in her immediate future. Oh, what a person will do to help AW...

I remember someone offering the definition of "dork" on these very boards a while back. I think it was Frank Baron who correctly related the term to a certain area of the male whale's anatomy. It's too bad the body part can't be mentioned in a squeaky clean auction thread.

I'll go rub the boss' feet and see if I can stroke out another buck.

I'm using power of persuasion (it means I really dig you). Now, I have it going back my way so don't blow my cover. <cough> Know what I mean? :D

Silver King
11-16-2006, 02:43 AM
One thing about this dork, whether you dig him or not, is that he knows how to work feet. He got a dollar for each foot! (I tried to get fifty cents per toe, but she's too fast with math even when she's in seventh heaven.)

Let this be a lesson to anyone willing to mess with the dorky masseuse: $24.00!

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-16-2006, 04:52 AM
It gives me goose bumps to see such a wonderful war! Come on Terri... you can do it... one more dollar!

Make him go back to momma and offer more than a foot rub!

writerterri
11-16-2006, 05:36 AM
I just gave my hubby a full head massage so 25.00, dork. And you've been doing your home work because you knew what that meant. Niiiiiice.

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-16-2006, 05:52 AM
Are you gonna let a girl call you names and take your books?! Come on, Dino! Look at that list! You know it's worth it! $26! Bid $26!

Silver King
11-16-2006, 06:17 AM
I went from a dork to a momma's boy in just two posts.

Okay, this'll prove once and for all who holds the purse strings around here.

Just a sec...I'll go ask...

$28 anyone? Hmmm? :D

Silver King

Silver King
11-17-2006, 03:45 AM
Did Terri say thirty? THIRTY??? Now that's downright dirty.

She's a scrappy fighter alright, holding me in a headlock and slowly squeezing until I grow faint. Luckily, I still have enough breath left to whisper, "Thirty-two."

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-17-2006, 04:43 AM

Ladies and gentlemen...

We've recieved a Silent Bid from a benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous.

If you want the book collection - and remember, it contains 'The Street Smart Writer'! - you're gonna have to come big or stay home.

The Silent Bid is for $50.00.

Do I hear $51?

Silver King
11-17-2006, 07:48 PM
Oh yeah? How about that. A mystery person.

That's a seriously bold and shrewd move on the part of the bidder. How in the world are we supposed to square off against someone we can't see?

Reveal thyself, oh silent and mysterious one, so that we may learn who we are up against.

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-17-2006, 08:37 PM
No can do, O' Silver Monarch. Our bidder has requested to remain a mystery.

How do you square off against a bidder you can't see? Alls whatcha gotta do is open that wallet.

You in or out? :D

How about you, Ms. Terri?

Silver King
11-17-2006, 08:47 PM
Our bidder has requested to remain a mystery.

You mean we'll never find out? Forever and ever? I was hoping we could bask in the glow of this person's generous spirit. And besides, I'm extremely curious. Can't you give us just a small hint? For example, what does the bidder's avatar look like? Come on, throw us a crumb...

writerterri
11-17-2006, 09:15 PM
I'm speechless! Literally.

I'm over my limit, I think...

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 12:41 AM
As of this moment, the Secret Bidder is still a Secret. I don't know yet when - or even if - I'll ever be able to reveal his/her identity.

This is kinda like that old show, "The Millionaire"... not that any of you whippersnappers would remember it...

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 01:24 AM
:hat: PsssssT! Hey! You! Bot' o' youse!

Silver King
11-18-2006, 01:46 AM
Sure. If I knew who I was dealing with, it might motivate me to raise the bar a little...or scare me off altogether.

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 01:48 AM
Well... it's definitely one of the more prickly members of our little community...

All we have to go on is "prickly?"

Okay. My Freudian analysis of the word indicates the person is male, right?

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 02:11 AM
Okay, Okay... so you need another hint...

There was a song about this member back in the... uh... back in the day.

Dork.

BWAhahahahhahhaha! I missed that the first time through!

Silver King
11-18-2006, 02:44 AM
Is it a song by a mega-band, such as The Beatles or Rolling Stones?

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 02:49 AM
The band was never as big as The Beatles or the Stones... but this was a pretty big hit for them. Might've been considered 'Bubblegum Music', but I'm not sure. That COULD be misleading...

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 02:51 AM
They were officially sunshine rockers... related to bubblegum. ;)

Silver King
11-18-2006, 02:56 AM

Not about the innocent part, though. ;)

Ol' Fashioned Girl

Surely you can find something else to accuse him of that will keep him up there for which he IS guilty!

Silver King
11-18-2006, 03:33 AM
Is the "prickly" member of the crustacean variety?

Also, when you said "sunny rockers," did you mean Sonny?

And why do I feel like I'm on a game show???

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 03:34 AM

Nope!

One last clue for now: The song had weather in it, too.

writerterri
11-18-2006, 04:09 AM
Alleycat!???

Silver King
11-18-2006, 04:21 AM
There are several clues which point to Stormie, and the song Stormy Monday also comes to mind. The Alley Cat Song is also from the early 60s, but I can't remember the group's name.

I guess we'll have to wait for an answer until our very capable auctioneer reappears from her dinner plans.

I wish she'd hurry up!:)

writerterri
11-18-2006, 04:23 AM
Me too.

Silver King
11-18-2006, 04:30 AM
The Alleycat reference gave me another idea: Cat Scratch. Remember the song by Ted Nugent, Cat Scratch Fever? That's from the 70s, but maybe Ol' Girl is getting her decades confused.;)

writerterri

I love that song! And Ted's not so bad either.

But we're probably still way off.

Silver King
11-18-2006, 05:03 AM
From what I can gather, these are the clues we have to work with:

The member is prickly, has a nickname that's part of a song, the tune is from the 60s performed by sunshine rockers related to bubble gum, and the song has weather in it.

Any more ideas?

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 06:39 AM
Awww, you guys are so CUTE!

But wrong.

All the way, stone-cold wrong.

writerterri

See, dino, I told you we were way off.

writerterri
11-18-2006, 06:46 AM
Oh! Who has a lobster in their avatar! I got it!

It's Daves or... Darn who is that?

Or it's the female who has a green splat in their avatar and calls it a green lobster.

Rock Lobster was in the 90's though.

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 06:46 AM
Very succinct gathering of the clues together... lemme see if I can add to them.

Here are the weather related lyrics:

1. Clouds
2. Stormy skies
3. Air
4. Wind
5. Rainbows

Silver King

We're hungry for more clues!

Ol' Fashioned Girl
11-18-2006, 06:59 AM
Dinner was delicious! Fried chicken, mashed taters and gravy, green beans, Texas toast, salad and iced tea. Mmmmm.

We can play with 'identity issues' all ya'll can stand.

But EW&F is not the group and Septemberskies is not the Silent Bidder. ;) Nor is Veinglory.

(I need one of those 'EKKKKKKK' buzzers...)

Keep trying while I go shower and prepare for bed.

Remember: Prickly and Weather.

Ladies and gentlemen, the auction is over and our winning bid of $50 came from our Silent Bidder: Cactuswendy!

The song clue was 'Windy' by the Association...

"Windy"
(Ruthann Friedman, 1967)

Who's peeking out from under a stairway
Calling a name that's lighter than air
Who's bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it's Windy

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who's reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy

And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds, above the clouds
(2X)

Who's tripping down the streets of the city
Smiling at everybody she sees
Who's reaching out to capture a moment
Everyone knows it's Windy
(to fade)

Silver King
11-18-2006, 08:02 AM

Thanks, Cactuswendy. You helped us have a good time, and lest we forget, donated for a great cause.:)

Finally, the mystery bidder appears in cyber flesh!

Thanks for helping us have a great time, CW! And I'm really glad you decided to reveal your identity. It would've been a shame if we had to figure it out on our own, and then follow you around like reporters with questions like, "So, Wendy, is it true you're the mystery benefactor?"

You are very generous and kind, CACTUSWENDY, and Jen picked a perfect time to offer her beloved books.
