How legal is it or is it even legal to sell something for a higher price than the retail price marked? I did a search of my PA book online and found that people are selling new and used copies for more than the original retail price. And no, they are not overseas sales... I checked. They are all advertised from different states right here in the U.S. Some were as much as $10 over the original cost for a used copy of the book.

It's legal. Retail prices are "suggested," not mandatory.

JD, not giving individual legal advice, just general information.

It's whatever the market will bear.

A book I wrote over ten years ago (paperback) is going on Amzaon for up to $37 for the US edition and $93 for the UK edition.

I'm just flattered that there's demand for it after all this time.

I have no idea who would buy a higher priced copy. I would not pay the retail price it has marked on it if my own book were in a book store. Sad but true.

As I understand it, it's in fact illegal to fix a price: hence the "suggested" wording.

I've found that a lot of the ludicrous mark-ups on some sites are purely automated; they pull in ISBNs and slap on $$ to try for the "collectible" market without even looking at the product in question.
