If you want to update your wordcount on the NaNo website, you don't need to upload your file. Use the Honor System option and just input the number. Uploading the file only really matters when you're close to the finish line.

I put in soccer mom with and without the space and it says you don't exist. Do you have a cloaking device on or something?

Mine is GottaGetANovelDone, sort of a play on my older WIP's title.

It might be a case sensitive search to add names on the NaNo website.

Another way to add buddies is from the person's profile. Go to a post made by the person you want to add (like on the AW thread). Click on the arrow after the name and you'll get a menu. Go to the person's profile and click on the "Buddy" button to add them.
