View Full Version : Lure in a Lurker

Read an article (http://www.useit.com/alertbox/participation_inequality.html) on something I hadn't realized: this writer claims that in most online communities, 90% are lurkers, 9% of users contribute a little and 1% of users account for almost all the action.

So, if this is true, then 90 percent of visitors to AW are lurkers?

Come on. You know you want to post. Come out and play..

Here, kitty kitty....

I bet the figures for lurking are a lot lower for AW. We aren't, as a group, really representative of the general population when it comes to putting down words, lol.

Ah, see, if you put candy corn against chocolate, then chocolate always wins, much as paper always beats rock. But candy corn in and of itself, as a singular delight, is irresistable.

I bet that's probably pretty close to accurate on any given day. However, if we look at the life of a forum, it's probably closer to 25% contribute a little and 10% account for most of the action. Unless you're talking OP, where 99.2% lurk and the elite .8% account for all the action.

Ewwwww! Did you have to give the lurker that name. That's about the creepiest name in the book, fella. Now I have visions of Randall lurking behind the silky silver curtains in the wings of the AW Cooler. EeeeeW! I don't think you're a shiny shiny jewel any longer!
No, real person to whom I reccommended this place. Now you've probably scared him off.

What does your PPD count (Post per day) have to be to not be a lurker?

I have about 160 posts. I've been here since August? That's roughly 3 months or a PPD of 1.77.

Of course I am am Queen of the Lurkers -- self-appointed, of course.

With conversations like this, how can you not delurk?

I do think that AW is different from other forums, being writers everyone here is witty and verbose. None of us can shut up when we're interested in something. Even our small threads are two pages long, and we beat interesting ones to a violent, bloody death. At least, that's what I've experianced in my short time here. I love it!

That'll make me, kinda, from Nantucket! ;)

Being in the 1 percentile, I can't really form an unbiased opinion on this. I am surprised, though, that more of the lurkers have not been drawn into posting by my magnetism and charisma? Surely to God they have access to my witty repartee...do they not?

I think the problem is that most of them have been intimidated by the afore-mentioned magnetism, charisma and witty repartee. "We couldn't even begin to compete," they sigh sadly, "so no point trying."

Those of us who do post reasonably often also realise that we can't compete, but have learned to live with that realisation.

Becky Writes

My post per day count is 3.50, but I actually lurked, only sometimes posted, and didn't read all the forums until about April of this year (11 months after I registered at AW). So it's a little misleading.

Well, the thing is, I used to hang out mostly in NEPAT (my original reason for coming here) and the Bewares board. Then school got in the way and I didn't post or read the boards much. Then in the spring things settled down a bit and I had more time to read all the boards and post more.

So that's why there's a big gap between my joining date and me becoming very active around here.
