I came across this problem a while ago. What I did was take my favorite author (Stephen King) and grabbed some first chapter excerpts from some of his books (Cell, Pet Sematary, Dark Tower 7 and Carrie) that I found online and then I transferred them into my word processing app (MS Word).
This helped immensely in order to analyze his work. It was much more effective than studying out of a book because of margins, type and other factors. With King's work, I was able to find how long some chapters ranged (in at 4000 words), how and why his narrative strayed, issues regarding Dialog, Description, Thoughts, and more importantly, Narrative Description.
In my opinion, if you find a style from a certain author that really captivates you, you could try the same and pick excerpts that you find online and see how and why it works. I advise using a word processor that you're using for your work so you get the same perspective on the writing between the other "experienced" excerpts.
