Book or short stories?

Books - I think you're usually looking at 4 - 6 months for replies of any kind

Shorts (depending on guidelines) 10 minutes to 6 months for replies.

It's different with every publisher in every format & genre. Does your publisher have a website you can check? Or published guidelines which give typical response times?

Best of luck - as long as it's still out there, it's still under consideration!

I've found that many magazines didn't bother to reply to my short story submissions despite the SASE. (Yeah, they were probably that bad.) It was hard to know when to scratch a particular publication off the list, counting its silence as rejection--especially after I got a funny letter from a magazine which had bought out another and found my manuscript (submitted to the predecessor, inappropriate for the new magazine) wedged between the wall and a desk which had clearly not been moved for several decades. I'd submitted it about two years earlier.

Maryn, who guesses those stories about piled manuscripts are true
