I've found that many magazines didn't bother to reply to my short story submissions despite the SASE. (Yeah, they were probably that bad.) It was hard to know when to scratch a particular publication off the list, counting its silence as rejection--especially after I got a funny letter from a magazine which had bought out another and found my manuscript (submitted to the predecessor, inappropriate for the new magazine) wedged between the wall and a desk which had clearly not been moved for several decades. I'd submitted it about two years earlier.
