Hi everyone (and sorry for the impersonal mass emailing),

I just wanted to pass along a short alert that my adventure novel about the search for Noah's Ark, called ARARAT, has just hit the cyber store shelves! (Yes, that means that it's presently only available through online bookstores.) I hope you enjoy it!
Here's an easy link to Barnes & Noble.com:

(Munged by AW poster)
Also if you haven't already, please check out the updated new website at

Thanks again to all for the support, kind words, and generous reviews!

all the best,
Jon Hargrove

"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic -- Jon Hargrove's
Ararat is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread
of history from Biblical stories to current-day
headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"
--James Rollins, international bestselling author of
Map of Bones and Black Order.

Unsurprising: they've been discussing buying email address scrapers and doing their own "promo".

Folks, this is not the way to promote your book. It gets you reported to every entity mentioned in the headers as an abuser. You may even lose your ISP connection.- It's not just that he could lose his email or web hosting account. It looks like the message you were sent violates the US CAN-SPAM law (http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/canspam.htm) for at least the following reasons:
- no opt out method
- no valid physical postal address

Each violation of the above provisions is subject to fines of up to $11,000. [snip]

Additional fines are provided for commercial emailers who not only violate the rules described above, but also:
"harvest" email addresses from Web sites or Web services that have published a notice prohibiting the transfer of email addresses for the purpose of sending email

Did this get sent to you? Because if they're spamming people who hate PA with spam for their PA book, that strikes me as about the dumbest person to spam to! Not that I'm saying we're dumb, but that they're dumb to try and get any of us to buy their book.

I feel left out, all I get are those viagra and porno e-mails, all of which are for guys. I mean what kind of guy would use "icerose" for their handle??

Oh, yes, and to an address that gets relatively little spam. I suspect someone is marketing a list of names to those folks and they have no idea _who_ is really getting them, except maybe a vague idea that _writers_ will see the mail.

Unless it's a book about writing, I'll never understand this marketing-toward-strangers-who-are-writers thing. As a whole we're one of the poorest demographics out there.

Sorry. I used to cut marginally related mails a little slack, but no more. Unsolicited commercial e-mail is spam, whether it is actually targeted to someone or not. If I haven't established a business relationship, or a friendship, or an e-mail correspondence with someone who wants to flog their newest book, I consider it spam and report it as such.

There is just too much abuse going and the entire e-mail system is in danger of collapsing in on itself. I won't support the efforts of anyone who contributes to that overload. It's just too easy to hit a button and send out a million or more mails. And while it is a bit of a bother, every one I can get to rethink that procedure is one more for the good guys.

I received an e-mail once from a PA author, asking that I help promote her book because she had a full time job and was working on another book, and didn't have time to do it herself.

I sent her a message back.

She deleted me from her mass mailing list.

Nuff said.

And I wrote back and asked why did you contact me, etc.? The Wanna-Be-PA-Author stated that he wanted me to help him as well. Oh, he also asked me to buy his book.

I THINK not.

Keep writing--I am!
