At a party a few years ago, I overheard a conversation concerning a state - possibly Indiana or Illinois - who had seized the battle flag of a southern state at Gettysburg and was now refusing to return it to the southern state. There was discussion of a law suit and the conversation ended with a southern partisan stating that "if their mothers had brought them up right, they would return it." (I love my people .... even when they don't have both oars in the water. Heck, I love them especially when they don't have both oars in the water.)

Has anyone heard of this situation and can give me anymore info? Or a web site where I might ask the question and possibly get an answer? Or suggestiong on Google tactics?

Thanks for helping me with a potential subplot.

How about Wisconsin? Try these two links:
Wisconsin State Journal (http://www.madison.com/archives/read.php?ref=/wsj/2004/04/19/0404180231.php)

Flagwire (http://www.flagwire.com/index.php?doc=28&aid=369)

I'm not sure if it's the one you referring to or not, but there was a situation like this in Tennessee a few years ago. It involved a battle flag of the Army of Tennessee (which is what the western part of the Confederate Army was called) that was captured by a Wisconsin regiment during the war.

Some organization (I can't remember whether it was the state or someone else) wanted it back. I believe they finally agreed to share the flag. It would remain wherever it was in Wisconsin, but would be lent to the organization in Tennessee whenever that wanted to display it.

I'm a little hazy on the details.

Could the organization be Sons of the Confederate Veterans. Maybe you could ask them about it?

I'm thinking that the Wisconsin link may be it. Thanks for having strong Google-foo.
