I woke up last night screaming "I put water in the petrol tank."*

Where did that come from? I dunno.

SO... anyone care to theorise what's going on in this pile of mush I like to call my brain?

* For those in the US - petrol = gas.

Are you English? Because that would be REALLY messed up if you were American.

It's clearly unresolved issues with your mother. Seek professional help immediately.

Maryn, thinking a professional plumber, sanitation worker, or ski instructor would all do equally well

Ooh! Are you feeling creatively stalled? "Out of gas," as it were? "Tank run dry?" (Um, do English people use these expressions?) I wonder if your brain's trying to come up with a reason why you're blocked or not able to move forward in some area of your life, so it's theorizing that you're not using the right tools to move forward.

anxiety. You are anxious about something working and you are afraid you don't have the "fuel" to make it run.
take it for the metaphor it is.
Cars in dreams (according to dream interpretters and possibly a load of crap) represent your life, livelihood. the "vehicle" by which you function. also could be your job. If you don't have the right fuel, you are worried about making something in your life work/run properly/ function properly.

It could mean you were just having a strange dream, and nothing past that.

no worries - dream cars can run on anything including water. go back to it and start it up.

you've been upgraded. you're getting comfortable in your current livelihood.

(but I like OFG's answer better!) :)

It means you have figured out the method for running cars on water. You have to delve into your subconscious to root the formula free. The fate of the world is depending on you. Just watch who you speak to. There are people who would kill to keep this thing off the market. In fact - wait. I've said too much.

*What was that noise?

There's someone in the house!

I usually dream that I'm on a plane and theres' a bed in the back...

if you're hooked up to an IV and someone is singing folk music and playing a guitar for you, then you need to stop watching Airplane! :D

(Rachael might be too young to know that movie??)

oh, gosh... just give me more nightmares about having IV's stuck in my arm, why don't you??? I'm already freaked out by the idea of a needle staying semi-permanently in my arm; I would hope my nurse-person would be more responsible than that...

No... usually I was just sleeping in the bed. Although sometimes I was giving birth in it... and every once in a while I was having a 'Toxic' music video moment. ;)

ETA: And I don't think that I would be flying on an airplane with an IV in my arm, either. ;) Running on a treadmill, maybe...

ETA2: Sorry, Trish; I forgot to clarify that 'Toxic' is a song by Brittany Spears. You know, just in case you were too old to get the reference.

Have you made any recent choices that you are concerned may come back and haunt you?

Like...maybe financial? Took out a loan that is going to strain the budget?
