View Full Version : Flash Fiction Friday

L M Ashton

I wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the short fiction thread. I dunno, I'm easily confuzzled... ;)

I've started a new blog carnival of sorts called Flash Fiction Friday (http://lmashton.com/2006/08/flash_fiction_friday_1.html). Every Friday (http://lmashton.com/2006/08/more_on_flash_fiction_friday.html), I'll put up a new prompt for the week. Participants have to write a piece of flash fiction on that prompt and post it to their site/blog, then... Well, all the rules are there, but the basic idea is to get us (to those of us who are interested) to write flash fiction, have a whole bunch of fun, and get more exposure for our blogs/sites at the same time.

If you're interested, check it out. :D

Great idea, quidscribis! thanks!

cool idea quids

L M Ashton
08-27-2006, 08:29 AM
Thanks, Dawno and Judi! Now if I could only get people participating...

My flash fiction is up, and considering I've never before now done flash fiction ever before in my entire life, I think I did pretty good. :) And it's now an idea for a longer piece of fiction. Not sure exactly what it'll turn into, but that's okay. It's also kind of the point, right? :)

Cath
08-27-2006, 03:59 PM
Great idea, quid - I'll have a bash at it.

Bk_30
08-28-2006, 12:03 AM
Quid: I wanted to comment on your piece, but when ever I click on "comments" it opens another window over your site, that refers back to you site. The window that opens shows no way to close it. The screen just shows the flash fiction logo, your name and entry, and who is hosting the contest. I don't know if this is an issue with your page or an issue with my computer.

I did like the post though :), especially the end lol

L M Ashton
08-28-2006, 05:23 AM
Cath - glad to have you join me. Have fun. :)

Bk, I can't duplicate what happened to you - it loads fine for me. Would you mind doing it again, and giving me every step in the process, including the URLs to the page you start with and the pages it goes to? Please either PM me or email me off-list - I don't see a need to clog up the list with this. :) Thanks for letting me know. :)

DTKelly

Quid...

I wrote a piece for your FF, unfortunately it sits at almost three times your word count, and I really don't see how to cut it down.

you call, do you want to include it or not?

L M Ashton
08-28-2006, 07:15 AM
Include it anyway.

Personally, I think the exercise is a valuable one, regardless of outcome, and blah blah blah blah blah my brian isn't functional all that much yet, I didn't sleep well and my head hurts. So, that's the summary of this incoherent mass.

Maybe I'll have functional sentences if I take a nap? :)

DTKelly
08-28-2006, 07:32 AM
... blah blah blah blah blah my brian ...

Well, I hope your brian feels better soon. ;)

edit:

It seems to be back up.

I hope you don't mind, I hosted the image and posted it for reference. If you do, just say the word and I'll take it done.

Edit:
ARGH. It went back down again.

Will definitely post it when I get up.

L M Ashton
08-28-2006, 07:46 AM
Nope, I don't mind. It's a really cool picture, isn't it?

(I had Fahim read over the edit on my blog entry. He's actually coherent and has more than 1/3 of a brian.)

DTKelly

Quid,

There seems to be a problem with the html code. If you click on a story, the page loads in the box and appears in a really thin table. Any idea as to why this is?

L M Ashton
08-28-2006, 05:23 PM
Nope, but I'll check it out and get Fahim, the master programmer and knower of all things technical to help me out.

Thanks for the heads up. :)

L M Ashton

DTKelly

Judi,

I've been having issues with my site. It's acting wonky.. Sometimes it loads, sometimes it doesn't. I'm working with my provider about it.

All I can say is keep trying, it just worked for me. (sometimes, if you just click reload it works fine.)

Quid, your link still opens up in a smalish frame. Is there anyway yo set it to open in a full browser instead of in the window?

Also, you missed the "t" in "net" in dtkelly.net. Just sayin'. ;)

L M Ashton
08-28-2006, 05:58 PM
Towerkel, put your cursor on the frame, then right click, then click on "reload this frame". That'll refresh the html code so it'll load in a new window. Then try clicking on the links again. :)

As for the t in net... Well, I dunno... Are we sure we want people to find you?????? ;)

DTKelly
08-28-2006, 06:21 PM
ahhh.. much better. :)

And good point, it is a Secret Government, after all.

come on muse...get your write on ;)

L M Ashton
08-29-2006, 05:11 AM
Bk, do you want to title yours?

Everyone - I have a question. At this point, I have the participants listed with blog name (linked to home page) and title (permalinked to specific post). Should I instead do it with participant's name instead of blog name? Or all three? What are your thoughts?

Oh, and just so you know, this isn't just for Absolute Write'rs - anyone can participate, so feel free to invite anyone to play. :)

Bk_30
08-29-2006, 05:34 AM
I think blog name with permalink to the post is fine. As for a 'title' how about remnants? yeah that works :)

L M Ashton
08-29-2006, 06:26 AM
Okey dokey. I'll change it in a few minutes. In between bites of breakfast. :D

DTKelly
08-29-2006, 06:29 AM
what about having the author's name, linked to their page? I don't think we need all three though, so either blog name and post.. or author name and post... I vote for Author name.. ;P

L M Ashton
08-29-2006, 06:36 AM
So. We're split.

Great.

Hmm, I might have to see if I can figure out how to do polls on my blog... :D

Oh, and just so you know, this isn't just for Absolute Write'rs - anyone can participate, so feel free to invite anyone to play. :)

Oooh, that means I can join the fun? Not been here too long, but been reading, reading, reading....

L M Ashton
08-29-2006, 08:01 AM

Um, I had help with my ending... But that's not cheating... Really, it isn't... ;)

Nope, it's not late. The deadline's midnight Thursday in the last time zone on the planet. (I changed the deadline. Don't mean to confuse you or um, anyone else.)

You're early. :)

I have a poll over on my blog now - you know, author's name/blog name - that whole thing. Vote now!

L M Ashton
08-30-2006, 04:30 PM

Anyone can suggest a prompt (for future editions, don't'cha know :))
Um, that's it.

Mine is up but having tech issues (surprise!) I took down the first logo and put it back up to see if it would change the settings on my blog? It didn't, what it did do...was not put the flash fiction symbol back up. It is posted in the post, copied and pasted the code just like last time no go...any one have an asprin? :flag:

L M Ashton
09-04-2006, 10:22 AM
I'm glad y'all like it so much that y'all want to keep playing. :D

When you've completed your entry for the week, please email me at lm (at) lmashton (dot) com with the pertinent details, which would be permalink, Title of post, author's name as you want it to appear, blog name, and blog url. It's less work for me if I don't have to go hunting down this info...

Thanks. :)

Also, due to a couple of comments about the iframe code breaking in IE, I've made a couple of changes.

<IFRAME SRC="http://www.lmashton.com/fff/fff1.html" TITLE="Friday Flash Fiction #1" width="500px" height="300px">
</IFRAME>So where you previously saw width="100%" height="100%" replace it with what's there now, and that should fix the code in IE.

Let me know if there are still any problems.

Bk, is that what you were having problems with?

Bk_30
09-04-2006, 10:50 AM
Yep that fixed the tag window issue..now to get my links back up top and all good, but that seems to be another issue altogether lol

09-08-2006, 06:25 AM
Hi everybody,

I've been lurking here for a while and just got around to registering. FFF has gotten me off my rear and actually writing something (rather than thinking about writing something), so thanks for setting it up. My entry for this week is here (http://infinityranch.blogspot.com/2006/09/sid-maury-fiction.html).

Now, back to my writing-for-a-living edit job (brief due tomrrow :e2yawn:)

L M Ashton
09-08-2006, 01:57 PM
Flash Fiction Friday #3 (http://lmashton.com/2006/09/flash_fiction_friday_3.html) is up! Play early, play often!

FFF#2 isn't over yet. With the deadling being midnight Thursday in the last time zone, and with it now being 3:26pm at GMT+5.5, that's, uh, carry the two, subtract 7, uh... That's still a bunch of hours away. :D You still have time to get in on the action!

:D Glad to hear your excitement, Beka. :D

I've changed the code. iframes doesn't work the way I thought it did (that is, it doesn't give us better search engine rankings or Technorati rankings), so I now have a script (Fahim wrote it - being married to a computer comes in handy sometimes :D) for all the weeks. Please replace the iframes code with this new script.

All details are at http://lmashton.com/2006/09/flash_fiction_friday_iframes_c.html

Sorry for not figuring this out sooner. :(

Ok, mine's up. http://blog.cathsmith.com/2006/09/remember-its-supposed-to-be-bad-aka.html

Don't ask me how the code's working in blogger, I just put it in, got the standard error message, but left it in - and it appears to be working apart from the logo.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to write over 750 words of bad prose? (No, really, I struggled...)

L M Ashton
09-11-2006, 06:30 PM
Cath, don't worry about the code not working right this sec. I a few alternatives, but I haven't been feeling that great today, so haven't finished posting the last one. I do, however, have a couple of options on my blog, so you can read it if you like. It's at http://www.lmashton.com I'll put the third option up tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I'm going to bed.

And about the bad prose... I'm looking forward to reading it. :D I haven't written my own yet. Yeah, I gotta write my own first -don'twant to taint my imagination with other people's stuff. Tomorrow.

Hey, everyone, I'm not dead, I've just been feeling lousy and haven't been at my computer. Hope you haven't felt abandoned or anything.

I have a couple of code solutions posted at my blog and another one that I haven't just because my head feels like it wants to explode a la Alien. Try what's posted if you haven't already. If you have, I'll type up the other soon.

Meanwhile, if that's all that's holding you back, please don't. Email (preferably) details on your FFF so I can at least get that put together and we'll work out code solutions as quickly as we can. :)

And remember, Thursday's the deadline, so get 'em in!

I'm buried in seminary work. Papers to write. Videos to watch. And books to read. Haven't had time to do much writing - except for the classes. Kinda stinks.

I do want to play, though. Of course, I need to figure out something in terms of where to post my stories. My blog is kind of a pastoral blog. My parishioners are gonna think I'm off the deep end if I start typing random short stories on it. :) Of course, some of them think that about me anyway.

L M Ashton
09-29-2006, 08:05 AM
Please please please please please please email me with the necessary information as I have outlined in the blog entry for that week. It makes it much easier for me to track everything as all the info arrives via my email, which makes organizing and blah blah blah much easier. Please. :)

Brian, would it work if you made a disclaimer at the beginning that it's for a flash fiction challenge? Alternately, you could create a new blog specifically for this and other non-pastoral things (a couple of others who are playing did that). Would that work for you?

L M Ashton

Also, the last couple (http://lmashton.com/2006/10/flash_fiction_friday_7.html) haven't had much attention (http://lmashton.com/2006/09/flash_fiction_friday_6.html), so if you want to write something belatedly, please do and I'll add you. :)

Had some kind of crud for 3-4 weeks that didn't leave me with much energy to do anything. I did start one, or was it a couple? Hmm, will have to check my files.

Anyway, I plan to do all the ones I've missed, because they're fun, and I don't mind being unofficial. They are good writing exercises and I've enjoyed doing them.

But ::and it's a big one:: I still need to start my outline for NaNo. Nope, not done it yet, but trying to get something together in my head so I can at least get something written/typed down. Or up? :)

L M Ashton
10-21-2006, 03:16 AM
Hey, Mel, I'm right with you. :) There's a few I missed and I plan on doing them (email me with your info when you're done please :)) and I need to get my outline for NaNo in place, too. :)

And a couple of days ago, we apparently decided we're going to Dubai in November for a few days, so that's going to crunch into NaNo time as well. :)

ETA: oh dear. I should have read the rules :( You needed my entry by midnight LAST night. Sigh. Well, I'm posting it for Matt's horror contest anyway. I guess I'll try again some other time to make the FFF deadline. Not next week, I'm afraid - I'm in class for 3 days and will have *shudder* homework...

Dawno, no no no no no no no! I have deadlines, but they're not, well, firm and fixed or anything! Send it to me!!!!!!! Oh wait! No, I just posted the horror one, and that's not due until next week Thursday!

Because a second post on the page sometimes cleared up that whole "I can't get to the last page!" issue.

ok, the question about the javascript code is still out there- I tried putting in the body of the post and it wouldn't accept it on blogger beta.

Right. Um, there's a solution somewhere. I have to consolidate that stuff... Hang on... I remember it being something along the lines of it giving an error message and you do it anyway, but that might not help... Let me dig it up...

Dawno
10-21-2006, 04:17 AM
Yep - I ignored the error message and it worked :)
ETA: Well, kinda - it's taking me to FFF 7...
E(Again)TA: Sorry if I'm slow on the uptake -

Let me fix the code...

L M Ashton
10-21-2006, 04:40 AM
Okay, Dawno, here's the part I didn't articulate to you. :) When I say "let me fix the code", that's not code for me telling you to delete the code off your site. ;) Usually, if there's something wrong in the code at my end, I fix it, and the next time you load that page, it shows up correctly. Assuming you added the correct script code in the first place. Which you did. So you can put the code back up cuz it should be working right now. :D

ETA: You can ignore this message. You didn't remove it at all, did you? When the script gets a certain kind of error, it just doesn't load at all. Like right now. So I have to go fix that error and it'll all be fine and show up again. *sigh* My brain. I swear. If I could shoot it...

Dawno
10-21-2006, 04:43 AM
but i didn't delete the code...it just disappeared, honest! dangnab blogger $#!+

ETA: ok, went back to the post and re-inserted the code and published - it came back. sheesh

L M Ashton
10-21-2006, 04:51 AM
Dawno, it's not you. It's me.

The problem is in your title - I'm Giving This Flash Fiction Thing A Try. The ' is what's doing it because in this type of script, the ' is a delimiter for specific types of information. So, I'm supposed to be able to replace it with " as the delimiter or \' in the text (as in I\'m Giving This Flash Fiction Thing A Try). Unfortunately, it doesn't always work and I don't know why. It seems... inconsistent to me. So, now your title looks grammatically incorrect. *sigh*

As a side note, the title doesn't refer to the title of your post, but the title of your piece. So, if you wanted to call it something else, like, maybe "hunger" for example, you could. :)

ETA: In this case, it wasn't your title. It was, um, user error. *runs*

Dawno

I haven't named the actual piece. Heck, I'm not even sure it's really horror. Or a story. Did I mention that I'm not a *real* writer?

Dawno
10-21-2006, 05:26 AM
um - quid - my sidebar got bumped to the bottom of the page...

L M Ashton
10-21-2006, 06:17 AM
Um... Try putting the script inside blockquote tags. As in <blockquote> the script goes here </blockquote>

Dawno
10-21-2006, 06:24 AM
:hooray: yay - it worked!

L M Ashton
10-21-2006, 06:25 AM
*whew!* Yay!!!!!

The next prompt is up (http://lmashton.com/2006/10/flash_fiction_friday_8.html)! Blame XTheNavigatorX for this one. :)

I already have mine up, should I post it again (I can, it's no big deal) or just send you an url of it?

Also, the last couple (http://lmashton.com/2006/10/flash_fiction_friday_7.html) haven't had much attention (http://lmashton.com/2006/09/flash_fiction_friday_6.html), so if you want to write something belatedly, please do and I'll add you. :)

I haven't had much time :( I'll take a look and see if I can squeeze it in. Stupid novel.

;)

Email me the particulars. :)

I won't be on the internet much today - it's Eid il-Fitr, festival that marks the end of Ramadan, which means much, much, much, much cooking and people over and stuff like that.

The contest ends today, so make sure you get your entry in!

Dawno
10-26-2006, 06:41 AM
I am so glad I didn't wait until the last minute! I've enjoyed reading the other entries in the FFF - although I get a "internal server error 500" message when I try to read Sophonax's entry...

L M Ashton
10-26-2006, 07:16 AM
Huh. It loaded perfectly fine for me. Maybe blogger was having a hissy fit at that moment.

ETA: Although "load" is a bit of a misnomer. Only the title loads. Nothing else. :(

Sounds like a great idea, though I'm doing NaNo and so I don't have a lot of time, even to do nano. I might have a go next round, but no promises.

Though, a story with a goblin is very tempting.

See, here's the thing... Use it as a prompt for your NaNo novel if you want, and provide an excerpt of said novel. There - you've hit two birds with one stone. :D

Hey, that is very, very tempting, except that my novel is a serious novel and goblins just don't fit -- or...
