We're now finishing up Round #1 (thanks to Razib!), and on September 1st we'd like to start Round #2. Here's a list of participants:

razibahmed: South Asia Biz (http://www.southasiabiz.com/)
oswann: BCOM (http://bcom.hautetfort.com/)
nancy02664: Nancy's Baby Names (http://www.nancy.cc/)
Marilyn Braun: Marilyn's Royal Blog (http://marilynsroyalblog.blogspot.com/)
quidscribis: Peregrinas (http://www.lmashton.com/)
Forbidden Snowflake: I might lose my mind (http://infinitevanity.livejournal.com/)
Bayou Bill: Bill's Bilge (http://billsbilge.blogspot.com/)
DTKelly: The Secret Government EGGO Project (http://www.dtkelly.net/)
Simran: Everything Indian (http://everythingindian.blogspot.com/)
KellyC: Pass the Torch (http://www.2passthetorch.com/)
Gooch: Cinema Fromage (http://www.cinemafromage.com)
Bk_30: Just a Small Town Girl (http://justasmalltowngirl2.blogspot.com/)
XThe NavigatorX: Fireflies in the Cloud (http://shiveredsky.blogspot.com/)
MadScientistMatt: Mad Scientist Matt's Lair (http://madscientistmatt.blogspot.com)
asorum: A View from the Waterfront (http://www.harboradvice.com/blogger.html)
MicheleLee: Michele Lee and the Road to Print (http://michelelee.blogspot.com)
TaliaMana: Talia Mana (http://taliamana.blogspot.com)
madderblue: Kappa no He (http://kappanohe.blogspot.com/)

Here's an example of how Round #2 will work:

Catwoman: Meow Blog
Joker: Riddle Me This
Batman: The Awesome Adam West Blog
Robin: Sidekick Chronicles
Penguin: Supervillain Weight Loss Blog1. The first person on the list chooses where to start.
Catwoman - "Let's start at Robin's blog."
2. Everyone on the list writes at least one comment at Robin's blog.

3. Once Robin gets half the comments he's expecting, he tags the next blog. (For Comment Chain #2, this means that you tag the next blog after receiving your 9th comment.)

Robin - "Holy Comments, Batman! I choose you to go next."

4. As we go from blog to blog, the master list is updated like so:

Catwoman: Meow Blog
Joker: Riddle Me This
Batman: The Awesome Adam West Blog
Robin: Sidekick Chronicles
Penguin: Supervillain Weight Loss Blog

4. Once everyone else is crossed off, we return to the first person's blog to leave comments and (thereby) close the circle.

5. Big party at the Batcave. (Optional)

6. The person at the top of the list gets bumped to the bottom and we do it all again next month.

But what if Batman wants to do Catwoman's blog (is that code?? ;) ).

Are you saying that no one can choose the first person's blog?

Just trying to make sure I understand.

nancy02664

Yep -- the person who leads things off will be last that round.

So Batman will just have to wait until the next episode to do Catwoman's blog... ;)

Os - Razib will start things off by picking the first blog. Once everyone comments on that blog, its owner will then pick victim #2, and so forth...

Just curious, have we decided whether the blogchain is a monthly thing? If so, wouldn't the next one start in October? or are we doing it more frequently than that? I don't have a problem with doing it more frequently I just want to clarify! :)

I was sorta leaning toward monthly, only because I think the comment chain might take a while to complete. (In fact, if it takes more than an average of 2 days to leave comments at each blog, it'll take *more* than a month to finish the chain.)

But things might speed up. I don't know if everyone participating even knows we've started yet. (If you don't get the rest of your comments by this weekend, I'll do some PMing...)

Also, I don't wanna be the comment chain Nazi or anything. If someone else wants to hold another one (either running in concert with this one or alternately), I think that would be great. The more comments, the better. :)

A humble suggestion from one with much to be humble about.

If we wait for everyone to post comments on a particular blog before moving on to the next one, the whole process could drag on for some time, especially if a member or two run into computer problems, go on vacation, or just flat out forget.

Therefore, I suggest that once approximately 50% of the members have commented on a blog, another one be selected for mistreatment. With the exception of a certain member named Bill, most folks use relatively short posts, so catching up shouldn't be a super chore.

Right now it looks as though almost everyone from the comment chain has commented on my blog - thank you!!!!!!

I had to check just to make sure as the comments were between three different posts! :)

Yup, tag away. Sorry if I wasn't clear about this in the instructions. (Maybe I got too carried away with the whole Batman thing....:o)

I was thinking the chain would go a lot faster than this, to be honest. I was hoping all commenting at a single blog could be finished in 1 or 2 days, not 3 or 4. If things don't speed up a little, I think adopting Bill's suggestion would be a good idea.

I ran into the same problem. Try "previewing" your message first, then submitting. When I did that, I'd get a security alert message both times. But by clicking "YES" things would work.

Since others had left comments and feeling certain Matt has forgotten more about this stuff than I'll ever know, I assumed the snag was my doing. BUT, if you had the same problem, then:

I know. ;)

But in all seriousness, I wonder, in this age of Desperate Housewives, raunchy rap lyrics, and "hot" YA novels, how the "love scenes" in that chapter compare.

One thing I learned working on it was how danged hard it was to write such scenes. I compare them to traditional "action" scenes such as a bar fight except emotions are usually a major element. That may be why the names of many famous older writers keep showing up on that yearly list of "Worst Sex Scenes."

This is a neat idea. I will have to see if anyone wants to do the same thing with forums as I need to populate my forum with enough posts to look active before I do my press release.

Nancy I replied to your one in the shopaholic thread. You can decide if you want to go through the exercise of addressing the "indecisiveness". I wonder if it is something to do with your moneypersonality. that's something else i've been working on. i have 8 money personalities that describe people's spending and saving habits. i am trying to see now whether they are adaptable to other things like eating, but so far it seems like people can be great in one area and lousy in another. it's quite fascinating. you would think people are equally good at being emotionally intelligent in all areas of their lives, but it doesn't work that way.

Last things first: Nav is using the Blogger beta and for some of us trying to post comments, it acts a bit, well, odd. The trick seems to be to PREVIEW first then SUBMIT.

As for my AV, there nothing subliminal about that poor Shar Pei resting its wrinkled head on a rolled towel except maybe I feel a bit like him at times. But seriously folks, it's just a hoot and a conversation starter.

I use a different AV on every board I infest such as: a pen and ink of Plutarch, Eeyore, an old comic strip character called Pogo Possum, and of course, the Shar Pei. Feel free to try and find a pattern. I can't.

that's a sharpei??? crikey. it just looks like a wrinkled pink towel. i know people who breed sharpeis and i've never seen one like that! i had to look at it and squint before i finally made out the shape...

i tried to load my fave avatar on here but it's automated and it didn't work. i'm guessing due to the size restriction. i might have another go later

Chocolate works, no doubt about it. :D

Bill, the bombs that have been going off in Colombo are about 10-20 minutes away from us. Close, but not close, if you know what I mean. Increased security means that everyone has to have ID with them when they go out to get through the security checkpoints. Between here and one mall we go to, there are something like half a dozen checkpoints. All armed with many men with big guns.

The situation here is not looking good. Over a thousand have died since the beginning of the year in the conflict. Everyone's waiting for full out war. Of course, full out war here tends to be more bombings, snipers, grenade attacks, and the like as opposed to American-military style war. But still, people die, the economy goes to heck, and everyone's generally miserable.

Quid,

Bombs, bullets, grenades, IED's, booby traps, land mines kill and maim just as surely, just as savagely as any high-tech weapon. Trust me on that. Been there, had that done to me.

Your country has known years of unimaginable heartache and violence. But if the Irish can figure out how to stop fighting, peace has a chance.

Peace won't have a chance as long as the leaders on both sides don't want peace. And at present, they don't - they're far more interested in power and lining their own pockets. Any attempts at peace talks are nothing more than a show.

edited in light of Nancy's wise words

Feel free to comment on any, heck, even all, of my posts, including the newest one highlighting the work of some writing buddies. The other posts are chapters from the novel I'm re-writing. Some include hot, steamy scenes, but Talia and Nancy, among others, have read them and lived to make non-threatening comments.

For those who don't like to bother with sig lines, here's the link to my blog, BILL'S BILGE http://billsbilge.blogspot.com/

This may or may not be useful, but: The first chapter of Bill's novel is can be found here:
http://billsbilge.blogspot.com/2006/07/coming-together.html

...and then subsequent posts are (duh) subsequent chapters. :)

I just wanted to mention this because I began reading somewhere in the middle, and now I'd like to go back and start at the beginning, and I was thinking others might also.

PS - Bill, you snuck in there on me! Did you just want people to comment on those two specific posts, or are the earlier novel chapters okay too?

well that might explain my confusion with the story if i commented on a chapter that was part way through the novel. it seemed complete in itself and i thought it was a stand alone short story. how many of your novels are published? (btw i laughed at your occupation "non profit")

:ROFL:LMBO  you're too much Talia. No wonder you didn't see them.

Actually Kajol isn't an ex miss world, I think your refering to Aishwarya Rai, who has played in several films with Shah Rukh Khan (featured in the video). Although her eyes do look green in this clip, they're actually brown in real (vs. "reel") life.

Simran - thanks for explaining the username change- I was also confused. :)

As for Aishwarya - I always thought her eyes were grey and have never heard of them described as brown anywhere. I dunno.

As for Indians with green or blue eyes... Yep, it happens, and so does violet. Northern Indians tend to be paler to the point of looking like dark Europeans, ie southern Italians. If you watch Bollywood movies, you'll notice a lot of actors who are much paler than you would probably expect for Indian movies - Bollywood values pale skin. If I had a bit of a tan, I could probably pass for northern Indian. Skin lightening treatments are valued and used here, and most women walk around using umbrellas to protect their skin from getting darker. As far as arranged marriages go, fairer skin is also valued and, when a person has it, it's used as a selling point.

Tamil movies, made in Tamil Nadu, however, feature darker skinned Indians as southern Indians (Tamil Nadu is in the south) are darker skinned anyway. But then, Tamil movies tend to be more, how do I say this, movies depicting common people, village life, etc. whereas Bollywood movies are more like Hollywood ie the beautiful people.

Sorry to hear you've been suffering with the low-down miseries, Quid. Hope you're now getting better.

I've been gimping around with a herniated lower disc pinching my right sciatic nerve for the last two weeks. Staying in one postion for any length of time is a challenge, making extended writing a near impossible chore. However, yesterday a neurosurgeon said cutting probably wouldn't be needed. Steroids and time should take care of things.

With a little bit of luck, Quid, in a few more days it could be party time for both of us. Maybe you can get caught up on comments after that.

Yay! Great comments so far!

What's the magic number before we tag the next blog? 9?Okay, Gooch. I love your blog. The writing is sharp and fun. But we've just gotta talk about your choice of links. For the peerless Veronica Carlson, we get an IMDb link that doesn't even include an image. What a let-down (so to speak).

Now I'll cut you some slack since my many years of training to become a dirty old man has given me a little expertise in this field. So trust me when I say a link to this striking photo of Ms Carlson with Mr. Lee (in fact, virtually any photo of Ms Carlson) would have appealed to a lot more readers.

We'd love for you to join the next round (which'll be starting in a few weeks), but we're close to being done with this one, and adding more people to the list this late in the game probably isn't a good idea...

Does this sound okay to you?

PS - I called this one the "September" round because I thought the game could be finished within a month. I realize now that comment chains take a little longer than that... :) Sorry to be confusing.

I'm sitting at four comments, all of which I got in the first few hours after I was tagged. Nothing in the last 24 hours... Hmm.

Correction. Make that five with one received in the last 24 hours.

rushes off to check whether i commented :)

it does seem to have lost steam, and there are people on the list that have NEVER commented on mine. My fear is that by tagging half way through some of us won't get all the commenters. I feel like I'm back at school snouting on the bad guys rofl, but it seems like not everyone on the list is actively participating...

L M Ashton

It's the same on the AW Chains as well. 9 or 12 people consistently comment, the rest are maybe half and half. Every single chain is the same.

I guess some people have the "conscientiousness" gene... funny but most of them also have the "love chocolate" gene. Of course all my friends are pre-selected on just that criteria!

I agree. The "9 comments" guideline makes things faster, but really lets people off the hook in terms of accountability, which isn't cool.

I'd really like to think up a new format for the comment chain--something that takes only a week or two to finish. I think we'd have a higher level of participation/enthusiasm that way.

The accountability is one thing, enforcement is the hard part - there's no penalty for non compliance. Unless we exclude "delinquent" commenters from future rounds ???

Personally, I think we need to move this to a new thread because this isn't just a comment chain problem, this is an all-chains problem. I'm going to start a new thread...

It would seem that we could move a little quicker, especially since members of the effort volunteered to participate. This is of course outside the realm of comments directed towards quid. Any comments thrown in her direction are likely to need a multiplier factor included in calculations of total engagement. I figure she posts at 3.7 times that of the average commentor that we see involved with the posts! Your mileage may vary.

Is there going to be a comment chain #3? I think it would be a good idea. We just need to figure out a way to generate better interest. Quid had an idea: http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showpost.php?p=843752&postcount=15 that might be interesting...

For some reason, I'm no longer getting e-mail notifications of new posts on this thread. Any thoughts?

Oh, by the way, I move we amend Quid's excellent suggestion that, "...we send (Asorum) over the wall in the trebuchet!" to read, The trebuchet be used to send Asorum over the wall.

Let's face it, Asorum can heal-up on his own time--a trebuchet would be a pain to repair. Just a suggestion.

L M Ashton
10-21-2006, 04:17 AM

It looks like I got 14 comments. I had the advantage of being tagged early so I think that helped my success rate! I wonder if a couple of people didn't participate at all as I don't think I saw their comments on any other threads.

I thought it was a great idea. Good for me to get people reading my blog, but also some interesting things in other blogs.

Looking forward to round #3

nancy02664
10-23-2006, 12:30 AM
Sooooo has everyone had comments from the 17 other people in the list?

I don't have all of them, but maybe 13 or so.

I'd say this was successful, but we definitely have to come up with a new format that doesn't last a month and a half. In another thread, someone (quid?) brought up the idea of a sort of 'comment week' where you try to comment on all the designated blogs within one week. No set order, no one-at-a-time, no babysitting -- just hit as many blogs as you can. That sounded pretty intriguing.

How do you guys think #3 should be run?

Talia
10-23-2006, 01:47 AM
My thinking was the following:

Limit to 15 participants so that we each have no more than 14 blogs to comment on
Have a set joining period i.e. until Friday to join
Have a set commenting period as quid suggests either 7 days, or 9 days if you want to give people 2 weekends. In effect this is 2 blogs per day to comment on
If you are participating in a blog writing chain on AW then you have to make a SEPARATE comment for the blog comment chain (i.e. one comment for this and another on the entry in the blog chain)
No excuses (except a bona fide death certificate :D)
Rules posted in advance so everyone knows what they are getting themselves into and the dates that they have to make time available to comment
People have to sign up for each comment chain. I think there were some people from #1 automatically included in #2. Some of those people didn't actively participate this time but got the benefit of comments from us :)

What do you think?

L M Ashton
10-23-2006, 07:38 AM
Sounds good. :) So does that mean you're organizing the next one? ;)

Talia
10-23-2006, 09:36 AM
I could so long as everyone OBEYS!!!

Might just wait for a bit more feedback first to see if the idea is a runner; feedback from the other thread you started was mixed, with some people saying they didn't have time to do that many comments.

L M Ashton
10-23-2006, 09:47 AM
One option is, if we limit the people who sign up to, for example, 20, and say that everyone has to comment on at least 15. Problem is that it could be the same 15, so the same 5 are always missed. That sucks. Or limit it to 10. Commenting on 10 is easier than 20.

Talia
10-24-2006, 07:36 AM
Yes, 20 is too big a number, especially if you have participants that are posting entire chapters of their w.i.p.

Hmmm maybe the limit should be smaller than 15. I only chose that as you'd have to comment on 14 blogs = 2 per day

nancy02664
10-25-2006, 01:32 AM
I think we should start out easy -- ten blogs, one week.

And, along with the whole 'honor system' thing, we should ask participants to leave a note once they've commented on all ten blogs. Anyone who doesn't come back and leave their (verifiable) "I'm done" post by the 7-day deadline should have to sit out on the next round.

I'd be happy to run it, if no one else wants to. (Though I'd have to start it in the next few days, b/c I'll be away for the weekend.)

Talia
10-25-2006, 02:58 AM
ok so that means 11 participants?

and i agree with the "i'm done"
if you do this one i'll look into the themed posting weeks for blogging and maybe start that. i just have to finish this chapter first or i will never get it off to the publisher

nancy02664
10-25-2006, 05:46 AM
ok so that means 11 participants?

Ironically, I wasn't thinking of participating (I'll be a little busy in the coming days), but I'll have enough time to set things up for people, so it really would be just 10 participants.

I'll start another thread soon for sign-ups...

Talia
10-25-2006, 08:15 AM
in that case I think you should leave it. There were 17/18 of us. No need for you to start it if you're not going to be involved!
