The meter passes my inspection, at any rate.

I like POT-ter books, HAR-ry or BE-a-trix,
and TUX-es, as WORN to high TEA-at-Rick's

I like Potter books, Harry or Beatrix,
and tuxes, as worn to high tea at Rick's,
Though my funds won't permit

Since both lines end in a dactyl (metrical foot with one accented syllable followed by two unstressed, e.g. 'flattery'), we get away with it.

Or do we?

I think we get away with it. I was confused when I first read it, but sorted it out when I put the emphasis on POT instead of LIKE. :)

*: as in Casablanca. If too farfetched, please overrule.
The meter is tight, but it works. Poetinahat does a valiant job in meeting both the meter and the internal rhyme structure... but since when did Rick's serve high tea?! Must have been after he sold it to the Sheraton chain of hotels.

Never mind. I see this one was euthanized.

One good thing about dead horses: you can feed 'em just about anything--used motor oil, sawdust, dust bunnies... Now, I've been to NJ, and I didn't see one bit of chapparal...nor any chaparral. It's just too dang humid there. They got sand, though...lots of it.

I tripped on the box in the hall
and woke up somewhere west of Nepal.
Though the air is quite clear,
I still wish I weren't here:

Do not bring any bologna.
If you do, you'll regret
Lacking medic or vet
