Working on improving your health by losing weight? Making efforts to improve your fitness level? Giving up cigs or caffeine?

I am going to get healthier this month, and was talking with another AW regular (Chunk! where are ya?) and we thought starting a thread for folks who are interested would be a grand idea.

Feel free to post any combination of your goals, your plans, and progress here. Post your weekly progress report on Friday, but feel free to come here anytime to get and give help, motivation and inspiration!

I'm starting Feb. 1, but if you stumble across this thread at any point after that and want to jump in, feel free to do so.

I will check in daily, more or less.

TIP: You are most likely to succeed at your goal if you have a plan. For example, when writing a novel, it helps some people to write a specific number of words each day. Take some time to make a plan that can fit your lifestyle, also be willing to make changes in your lifestyle to meet your reasonable, attainable goals.

I'm spending less time with the cookie jar this month, and more with the bench press.

My goals are to lose 12 pounds in February and improve my fitness level. My plan is to follow the South Beach diet for two weeks (longer if I am feeling good about it and it's helping me) and to get a minimum of three hours of exercise each week. I'm supporting my plan by grocery shopping tomorrow to have the right foods available, and am working with a personal trainer (I've been doing this for a while) to help with the exercise component of my plan.

This challenge (maybe if it's working for us, we can start a new one in March) will end on Feb. 27.

I'm in - I rejoined the gym this month and have been doing aerobics and weight training 3X a week so far. My goal is to continue doing that through March 15, when I have to decide whether to re-up at the gym (I got a 3 mo. holiday special) or just contniue doing it on my own (a dubious success rate on that in the past, though...)

Hope to lose some weight, but mainly am doing it because I'm always tired and spend far too much time sitting on my backside.

Other goal - to fast one day a week for at least two meals and read part of the Bible every day, for spiritual health. Actually more important than first goal, but not to be done for public consumption, so won't mention it again here (but feel free to bug me about it privately :eek )

Hey Lisa and Betty!

My goal is to lose 80 pounds. Naturally, it won't happen by the end of February. I want to reach this goal by my birthday in October. I'm doing it by cutting down the size of my meal portions and cutting out the potato chips, etc.

I started one week ago today (Mon.25th) and on that day I weighed 250lbs. Now, if I was a linebacker for the New England Patriots, that would be okay, but I'm only two inches taller than Michael J. Fox.

As of this morning, my weight is 246lbs. I'm on the way!

My goal is pretty much to continue being healthy and improve in little ways like eating more of those darned fruits and veggies. :p
I work out for 40-60 minutes on Mon/Wed/Fri and I hope to start going for more walks now that the weather is warming up.
I'm also cutting down on portion sizes when having meals. That is a little tougher because I love food but I'm getting there. And I've cut out most bread and pasta, unless it's actually somewhat healthy hehe.

Good luck everyone !

Don't worry, wurd, we'll save you from yourself!

I have nowhere to go but up. I ended January on a 7 day bender. So, February 1st, no drinking. Tuesday night, $2 Mickey's Malt Liquor Big Mouths at the bar. That might be tough.

I don't need to lose weight, but I'm such a weakling, I can hardly hold my big fat head up on my scrawny little neck. Backaches, I got backaches.

My goals are small. I got my kids one of those giant balls as a toy, and it came with a poster of exercises, and I can actually do them! except for the push-ups. I want to run thru those exercises at least 4 times per week.

And last month I accidentally gave up coffee. My kids were both sick and I was making so many pots of herbal tea, I never had a chance to make any coffee! So, I'm capitalizing on that: no more caffeinated coffee.

Does "no immobilizing neckaches in 2005" count as a goal? And if I can do a couple of push-ups, I'll give myself 5 bonus points.

And I was drinking Peet's too.

Sigh. If anyone wants to buy me a decaf mocha, I'd still accept that.

p.s. This makes the 5th time I've "given up" coffee.

Ok, gang!

Tomorrow is the beginning! You ready?

We can do this! Wahoo!

TIP: Always wear a life jacket when boating.

What does that have to do with this?

Not a darn thing!

My plan for my first day includes an hour at the gym--either a training session or a class (depends what I can fit in).

Talk with you tomorrow.

And no sweets (my weakness).

aka eraser

Okay. Count me in too. I need to cut down more on my smoking. So...starting tomorrow, I'll take it outside. I'll remove my pipes and tobacco from my desk and keep them by the front door.

And hope it's the mildest February in Ontario history.

biotales

Eraser: "And hope it's the mildest February in Ontario history. "

YOU HOPE.... BABY PRAY IT IS THE MILDEST FEBRUARY....

Wear long johns.... please wear long johns.... We would hate to find you frozen with pipe and pencil in hand...

I'm so proud of myself today. I missed going to the gym for aerobics yesterday when my parents came by unexpectedly, so... I got up an hour early and went this morning before getting ready for work! My reward was returning home to discover a 1 hr fog delay for school, which gives me time to visit y'all!

errr...I had leftover eggplant parmesan for breakfast, instead of the gut-buster 7-11 Chili Dog I really wanted...

(It only sounds weird until you realize I haven't been to bed, yet)

Betty W01

Damn, girl - GO TO BED!! You're making me tired just thinking about it. And you're gonna need to be rested when we kick bio's butt.

Paprika: I use an exercise ball too, they are great. In a lot of magazines these days they offer different exercises you can do. Another thing that's also good for posture is sitting on the ball (like while at the computer and such).

sugarmuffin

Alrighty, then.

First: To anyone who isn't relatively serious about making a lifestyle change, consider your heinie booted to the thread of your choice. I'll find you and deal with you there (I think I know where I can borrow a taser) :evil

:)

Second: This is the first day of a healthier month. I'm already hankering for something sweet, especially 'cause I'm feeling tired to due a little flubug or something, but I will not give in!

My fridge is stocked with healthier choices.

Also, I traded coffee for tea this morning, because I like my coffee with real sugar.

It isn't going to be that difficult.

It isn't.

Really.

sugarmuffin: One sugar junkie to another, I had some success with a regime from a book called "The Diet Cure" by Julia Ross. It really truly did virtually eliminate my sugar cravings, but I haven't been able to keep up with all the nutrional supplements she recommends. She also recommend eating properly, and I'm just not there yet. Real food involves too much shopping and too many dishes.

April: Sit on the ball! Thank you for reminding me, I've been meaning to try that. Ahhhhh! Yes!

Mac: have you read "Fast Food Nation"? It's on my Books That Changed My Life list. I always knew fast food was bad and unhealthy, but who cares? The social and economic issues of those franchises stopped me cold. It's been about two years. I miss Taco Bell and Der Weinerschnitzel, but I'm not giving them my money, no way. Now, if I happened to find a Burrito Supreme on the ground, wrapped and warm, I'd eat that and rejoice. <img border=0 src="http://www.ezboard.com/images/emoticons/sick.gif" />

This sounds like a great idea. I haven't thought of a specific number to lose for February since I'm still getting over hurting my back at the first of January. I am, though, going to join Weight Watchers and try to figure out what exercise I can do without aggravating my back.
