I sent my first novel to a small publisher a few months ago. They have a system for responding, where they send out all responses for submissions recieved in a given month on one arbitrary date. And all of it is by electronic means.

The date has passed, and I've heard nothing from them. Their automated system acknowledged that they had recieved it, so I can't imagine that they never got it. Is it acceptable to ask them about it?

How long ago did you send out the submission? Did the publisher post the standard amount of time they usually take to evaluate the submissions?
If it has been more than say, 3 or 4 months, I don't think dropping a short email to follow up is a problem at all.
Good luck!
