When sending in a reference for an editing job (or any writing job I spose), and if ive never done the job before professionally - do I just list references for people who know me, or does it have to be a reference of someone Ive actually worked for?
Do I have to have a reference at all?
The one Im going for is in a teen girls mag, sorta competition thiung so Im thinking noones necessarily going to be more experience or have professional references - so what should I do? Thanks for any help

At the end of my resume I just say References and writing samples are available and let the employer ask. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, but then I have a very strong resume and a lot of published works. The best professional references are the ones that are from people who can address your ability to do the job you are applying for. If you haven't got that, I would say that any work reference is stronger than a personal reference.
