View Full Version : Would you tell me if you can see this?

The mods are trying to figure out if the members see deletion notices when we delete threads. It appears that some members do and some don't. CC, a brighter bulb than I am, thinks that maybe it's a matter of usergroups-- maybe Super Members and above (50 posts and up) can see the deletion notices, and others can't. So, to test this, would you take a look here:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=17

Do you see a deleted thread with the subject "Subject2" and a notation from GoodWord saying it's spam?

P.S. And now a deleted thread with the subject "Free Money" and a notation from me saying "Die, spam, die"?

(The spammers hit that board hard. We don't know why.)

Interesting. No subject lines, but you do see the deletion notices. OK, now I just have to hear from some newer members to see if CC's theory is right. I logged out and then I couldn't see any deletion notices.

You don't? Wait, that blows the theory. Go have your second cup and look again. ;)

Walked the dog...had more coffee...
so am partially awake..
The last thread which says "moved" (something about resumes)
but no thread that you are describing
First thread is a sticky "Resoruces"

And Jenna for a mommy-to-be you are up real late!

Jenna,

As you have already checked, you can only see it if you are logged on.

Firefox when it opens a new tab, from a URL posted in another, does it as a new app (according to my set parameters), and I did not pay attention cause I need too much caffeine to wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could it be a browser issue?

By the way, I tried changing my various "edit options" to see if changing a setting would make a difference in whether I saw the deletions or not. No matter what I did, I still saw them.

And Good Word keeps deleting the posts from sexy overseas women wanting to meet me. I told her to knock it off. How am I ever going to get a date . . . ?

Is this still an issue? If you need a newbie to look at it, I'm logged in and I can't see them. Just the thread with the sticky at the top, followed by the most recent thread from about 15 minutes ago.

Didn't see your suggestion until I came back here, but had the same thought. I just hit 50 posts, but I still can't see the deleted threads.

And I'm definitely logged in.

K, they're still at it. When we delete stuff, we can either "soft delete" (which leaves a deletion message) or "hard delete" (which makes it completely disappear). We gave up and started hard deleting from that board yesterday because there were so many that the whole first page was littered with deleted spammy threads. I've been nuking porn spam this morning. I've got to figure out why they're so attracted to the business & technical writing board.

P.S. Thanks, Maggie! That seems to fit our idea, then-- newbies and people who aren't logged on don't see the soft deletes. (The system takes a few hours to notice you've hit 50 posts, so you'll probably see them later today.)

Thanks to everyone for checking!

I've got to figure out why they're so attracted to the business & technical writing board.

Because they have a "business" that involves posting spam, they think they're posting in an acceptable forum, or, they don't give a drat.

You're welcome, Jenna. Just to cover the bases, I used Firefox before and have now tried it with Explorer with the same results. I can't see the deleted threads whether or not I'm logged in.

P.S. Does this mean you're gonna welcome me to AW soon, Jenna?

Because they have a "business" that involves posting spam, they think they're posting in an acceptable forum, or, they don't give a drat.

Right, but why that particular board? I feel like it must either be keywords, or it's linked to some spammer haven, like, "Hey, spammers, here's a good spot to post!" Why wouldn't they be all over the bargains board, or office party, or TIO, or the bewares board?

And Maggie:

Okay, but I'm saying it quietly so the others won't hear. Pretty soon they'll all be expecting welcomes.

Welcome to AW, Maggie.

Right, but why that particular board? .

Welcome to AW, Maggie.
I heard that!

One idea I had was they pick the first forum they come to that seems most usable. In other words, they bypass the ones labeled Novel Writing, Scripts and Writing Short Stories; they probably don't even understand what those are about. Then they come to "Business and Technical . . ." and, bingo, "let's put it there!"

Just a theory. Not a very good one maybe . . .

Hi kids!

First, welcome to everyone I've neglected to welcome before, especially davids ... how the heck this is the first time I've run across a guy with 1,400+ posts is beyond me.

Second -- yeah, it sure looks like people with less than 50 posts and lurkers are the only ones who can't see the deletions. Which means we gotsta keep cleanin' the joint up or else everybody'll be tripping all over the deletes alla time. Sing it with me, kids....

It's not my imagination - you really did change the name of the forum, right? I hope it helps. It was getting fugly with all that spam.

JennaGlatzer

Yep, I changed it. And I moved it to a different spot. And sent the new threads to a moderation queue. Pain in the rear, but I hope it works!
