I would say texted. I normally refer to them as text messages not SMS.

Don´t know if that helps or not.

Bear in mind that a lot of people (like moi) don't text, so we don't know "official" terms. I wouldn't have a clue was SMS is. Possibly Stupid Menstrual Syndrome, but I could be wrong. However, texting I understand. I don't know how to do it, or even why people do it, but at least I know what it is.

Text-messaged.

SMS stands for Short Message Service, which is a noun. So you should use SMS as a noun, not a verb. In the field, I think people don't say "I just SMSed him." Instead, they say:

- I just text-messaged him
- I just texted him
- I just messaged him
- I just sent him an SMS message
- I just sent him a message/text-message

What Maestro said, with the addition that SMS refers to a specific protocol, a technical method, and not all text messages use it.

And text, while a noun, has over two hundred years' worth of use of as verb as well.

I had no idea that SMS refered to a particular service protocol! Thanks.

my kids will mention that they have tm'd someone but if I they had not brushed me up on the meaning I would have no idea what tm meant or sms. The suggestions offered about texting work much better for me, unless you are writing for a zine whose audience is savvy.
