He's a gorgeous chestnut colt, now about 18 hours old. Mom and baby are doing very well.

:D

When you figure it out, will you let me know?
The picture didn't come through. Please tell me you saw that the picture didn't come through. (Unless it is just me.)

I am glad to hear Mom and babe are doing well.

Woo Hoo! Finally! I bet his mother hates him soundly, but she'll get over it.

Fix that picture Lady!

...Weird. I can see the pics fine.

Still aren't seeing them? You can click here, and I've got them posted, as well, Tammy.

Thanks, Perks!

he's a little pistol. He's bucking and running today, already, and his little lips get all mad and wrinkled when you make him do something he doesn't want to do.

It's adorable.

Thanks, Rob--I used my camera phone, which is frustratingly limited--but does have the benefit of uploading the pics directly to my blog, when I ask it to.

Perks, he IS skinny--and his legs...he looks like a giant daddy-long-legs, when he tries to stand up. :)

Errr....well, yes. That, too.

ETA: just removed a pic that's just too blurry. It hurt my eyes. Sorry. Heh.

What a wonderful baby! Gosh... makes me remember my old horse days... I had a Shetland mare and my best friend had a Palamino stallion. If you don't think we didn't look like Mutt and Jeff...

Congrats on the new baby!

I had a beautiful Arabian/Appaloosa filly when I was a teenager. Her name was Spirit. Lovely name, dontcha think? ;)

That's my suggestion. Next?

Great, Mac!

What are the guidelines for the name?

For example, when I lived on one commune, we went alphabetically according to the year, so it was easier to keep track of when they were each born. And then at some point, we had themes, like all of them were named after flowers for one year.

Ah. How about "I'll know the right name when it whacks me in the forehead" ?

Are those good enough guidelines? I really am drawing a complete blank.

Thrilled, doing a happy dance, etc. etc.

Revel.

Rev, for short.

Can you give us some details? How long did it take?

That's the method I use for choosing just about everything, Mac. Heh.

The mare was very quick--about ten minutes from water breaking, to delivery.

The colt was a little stupid about nursing, though, and kept us up the rest of the night. I finally milked the mare for the first colostrum, and bottled it to him, so he wouldn't get too weak.

As of this morning, he's nursing vigorously, and trotting and cantering and bucking. Then he gets his legs all tangled up and crashes over. :)
