How many great songs are there? Too many to narrow down "the best" of all times, right? But here's something different: great lines from songs, as set to appropriate music.

And the greatest is:

I went to the market to realise my soul...

Admit it, you heard it in your mind as you read the words, and a chill ran up your back.

Rob :)

ETA: Oh, for the kids--it's a line from Rudie Can't Fail by the Clash.

This is long, but:
everywhere you go across this great land you're gonna see a telephone pole/spreading progress across the sky/well they make the poles out of big, straight trees/they can't use crooked trees to make the poles/well I may be a twisted tree, but I ain't no telephone pole

This one always gets me teary-eyed, but it sounds better when the artist sings it. All right, I am a closet romantic.

Didn’t matter how simple or how much - It was love - And, boy, ain’t that love just something. When it’s strong enough to keep a man goin? - Over the line - Working overtime - She is his only need.

I don't like that "market/soul" thing actually.

Fats Domino is cool. There's a man who's having fun.
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah

--Rufus Wainwright, "Hallelujah"

Sends shivers down my spine every time.

The oranaments look pretty but they're pulling down the branches of the tree
I don't want to think about it, I don't want to talk about it
When I kiss your lips I want to sink down to the bottom of the sea

ok, two more:
woke up Christmas morning, angel said to me: "pack your bags tonight"

in my dreams she is reaching past my hollow core
and her smile's the open sign on an abandoned store

On the sofa, with cat and laptop
If I die of vanity, promise me, promise me,
they bury me someplace I don't want to be,
you'll dig me up and transport me, unceremoniously,
away from the swollen city-breeze, garbage-bag trees,
whispers of disease and the acts of enormity
and lower me slowly, sadly and properly
Get Ry Coonder to sing my eulogy,
At the hundredth meridian where the great plains begin.

- Tragically Hip, "At the Hundredth Meridian"

And it’s you when I look in the mirror
And it’s you that makes it hard to let go
Sometimes you can’t make it on your own
Sometimes you can’t make it
Best you can do is to fake it
Sometimes you can’t make it on your own

- U2, "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own"

Does the chorus from Lordi's song "Devil Is a Loser" count as great lyrics?

There's hell to pay
Cos the Devil is a loser and he's my *****
For better or for worse and you don't care which
Cos the Devil is a loser and he's my *****
Runnin' into trouble you skitch
He's my *****

(well, it makes me happy. I think it's funny.)

following the breadcrumbs back to AW
"Someone left my cake out in the rain,
and I don't know if I can take it,
'cause it took so long to bake it,
and I'll never have that recipe, again, oh, no!"
--MacArthur Park

(sorry, I couldn't resist.) :gone:

Seriously, the Eagles' "Take it Easy" has a line or two that always gets me.

"Take it easy,
Take it easy,
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy."

Then she drew the curtains down
And said, When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers
And God doesn't care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and over-inflated

Does not this God you spoke forgive sin?
What might I do for his love?
Shall I have a bastard child?
Shall I slave my nights to a tormentor of my bane?
Just as, is it his pleasure, so shall my pain,
as I shall not relinquish my virginity to a virol pretender

Now I seek forgiveness of my adolence mind,
and no such trick of yours will prevail,
but never fail to take what was ours,
while the sleep for us is of no avail.

Broken down kitchen at the top of the stairs
Can I mix in with your affairs?
Share a smoke, Make a joke
Grasp and reach for a leg of hope
Words to memorize, words hypnotize
Words make my mouth exercise.
Words all fail the magic prize
Nothing I can say when I'm in your thighs

To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Tho' my life was in a rut
Till I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

And the feeling that its all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl
