What's a good, famous, example of such a character. Someone who has gone from having it all, to becoming a slave, begger, etc.

I googled "fiction - riches to rags" and came up with the following:

Nicholas Nickleby
Old Curiosity Shop
Martin Chuzzlewit
Little Dorrit
Hard Times
Sister Carrie
The Magnificent Ambersons
The Sound and the Fury:
The Mayor of Casterbridge

Is it just a coincidence that most of them are Dickens? I was also thinking of a GBS play called "Enemy of the People" about a civic leader who tries to warn the citizens about a heath hazard and gets shafted for his trouble.

The Count of Monte Cristo.

The Russell Crowe character in Gladiator.

Spartacus.

And while not fictional, Moses.

Hi,

Ben Hur, with it's classic chariot race, deals with this.

The Prince and the Pauper.

Les Miserables.

In real life? The Russian royal family, right up to the moment they were executed. Same for the French Revolution and Madame Guillotine.

Cheers,
Steve

I thought of that too. But the question was a character who had it all and then lost it. The character in Les Mis was poor to start with.

Moses? That's interesting. Why him?

I'm not too familiar with his story.

Moses, born to Hebrew slave parents, became a prince of Egypt -- foster son of Pharoah's daughter, so he was of the royal house. He killed a man and was banished, wandered in teh desert and went to work for a desert chieftain, herding sheep. I read somewhere that the Egyptians hated sheep. (Why, I don't know) He worked for Jethro of Midian, married Jethro's daughter Zipporah but was then called by God back into Egypt to confront Pharoah and convince him to release the Israelites (Hebrews). Passover commemorates when the Israelites finally regained their freedom.

During Moses' years in the desert, he didn't have much of a portfolio.

Hope that helped.
