Today's word -- I ask you. Is this fair?

From infoplease.com:

Your 16-year-old cousin is a self-proclaimed poet who wishes he'd been born in the 19th century. Besides walking around in a frock coat and top hat, he produces reams of taradiddle. His writing can be described as

a.) Old-fashioned verse.

b.) Confessions of the self-absorbed.

c.) Pretentious nonsense.

Ditto-I walk around in a frock coat and top hat and have no idea about poetry-is it hot in here?

Well! Of all the...

Excuse me, I need to change into my frock. I'm off to an invitation-only soire for artists and need to rehearse the names of the authors I'll be name-dropping during shallow discussions with fellow-creative personas.

Pretentious, indeed! Hmmmpph...

Does that suggest poets belong in the 19th century? That is boloney or more to the point--taradiddle! :D

H0w many poets can produce one ream of tarradiddle, or any other kind of diddle?

Of course we have an image problem. (Blame it on the imagists.) why else do we attempt to "fix things" or compare them to something else, extoll the virtues of a red wheelbarrow etc.

I liked that Haggar khakis advertisement a few years ago that showed a surly young man ( apparently destined for a career in stolen auto parts) spouting such personal revelations as-

"I am not what I wear. I'm not a pair of pants, or a shirt. I'm not in touch with my inner child. I don't read poetry, and I'm not politically correct."

It made me want to jump up and cheer. "Hoorah!" It was liberating for men to be out in the open with their illiteracy and wear Haggars instead of reading. Remember the dark ages when we were pairs of pants and shirts and had to read poems?

If you keep diddling around you're going to turn this into an X-rated thread.

Anybody who invokes the word 'diddling' is just asking for trouble. My theory is that YOU are the one trying to get the x rating on this thread, my lovely. Shame on you and you alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
