Excessive quoting in replies
When a post is long, quoting the whole thing in a reply wastes bandwidth and slows other people's page downloads. I saw it again today: a great long quoted post followed by one word from the replier. Worse, the reply was #2 in the thread. That's really wasteful. If you're poster #2, we all know you're replying to post #1.

Since this is the FAQ forum, I'll frame my complaint as a Q.

Can't people stop doing this?

Okay, my joke has been up long enough.

In actuality, I just had this conversation in PM with a new AWer.

Carry on.

Reph has a point; excessive quoting is a problem not only for people on modems, but also people relying on software that reads the screen out loud because they're blind or otherwise visually impaired.

Moreover, it's expensive; AW pays bandwidth fees.

It would be nice. I find it very helpful if the responder quotes the specific point he's referencing, but beyond that, it is a waste of both bandwidth and eye-hopping (pancakes anyone? sorry)

Everybody listen to Reph.

I generally only quote what's necessary. I like to quote in my critiques, and if it's not clear who I'm quoting. :)

Actually, I think it may be that some aren't sure or know how to do that. For the record--after clicking the quote option and the text appears--highlight and delete or backspace the text away between the [ quote=anyname ] and the [ /quote ] leaving only the text that you want to respond to. If it's a long passage...do a regular reply and put attention "anyname" in the title header and respond in the text area.

Hope that helps a teeny bit.

Thank you, Patricia. I have wanted to quote and couldn't figure out how to just get what I wanted so I paraphrased instead. I have also taken what I wanted to Word and then repasted it back into the reply. Puma
