Yeah, I'll chime back in here and say that the middle is very tough going. I worry about losing pace more than anything else here, and wonder if a reader is compelled to continue on with the story. I feel self-concious about wanting to purposely "bait" the reader with some extraordinary gimmick or device, when I should be just writing the dang thing.
