so we lost the volumes 1 and 2 of "theme me, baby" in the great crash of june 06 (i've recovered the cached version of vol. 1 -- page 1 and page 2 -- no luck yet on vol. 2).

but we should probably get back on that horse, so for those who wish to play, we'll do a (loosely) holiday-related theme... this does not in any way have to be addressed in the political sense or specific to the US... make it as sweeping or personal as you like...

the theme is:

liberty

Well, this has nothing whatsoever to do with July 4th, liberty in the broadest sense.

Liberty

To close the door and know
That no one else will open it.
Eat cornflakes all day and
Feed them to the kids.
Make friends with who I like
Even if I know there’s something wrong
So what? It’s only talking.
I’d like to live each day without
Your sneering critique of me
To wake and stretch out
To the day knowing it belonged to me
Not you.
Now that would be liberty.

Sorry to interupt here...if anybody finds the thread to the second theme me baby thread, could they post it here. I'd like to use the poem I posted there...but (again) I didn't save a copy. Thanks in advance.

The liberty bell cracked
it's face flushed with sadness
about some poor kid that came home
thrashed hamburger without the cheese

I felt it's pain as I stretched out
having a good yawn at hamburgers heaven
never liked cheese on the burgers
whatever became of pain?

Liberty bell's roots like trees
they were planted down so deep
the fodder for tomorrow's guns
bumped occasionally above the ground

I'll follow too closely
it'll never happen to me
now I wont trip just you
poor damn you!

Liberty bell has a new crack
to tell us what to do
the fodder for tomorrow's guns
to fill those burger buns.

Let's try a Ghazul:

No matter freedom, all seek liberty.
And hope to live in light and liberty.

Speeches, justice, men shouting cries of war
Will sacrifice their sons for liberty.

A thousand tongues proclaim the good of all,
And comfort sweetly lying liberty.

What can all agree when seeking sure truth?
That life wastes away without liberty.

Beautiful is the life that can be lived
Full in the joy of freedom’s liberty.

In my home we worship in liberty,
Praying all may find life’s true liberty.

Freedom

Four steps back
to make sure
the light is off.

Ten steps,
driveway to door,
is it locked?

One mile,
the oven.

Life is about
going back,
making sure,
double checking.

Freedom,
down the drain,
because someone left
the water running,
maybe.
