Who has the list for the third round of the blog chain? I think I'm coming up, but I'm not sure who is supposed to follow after me.

Hi guys - Could you change the name of my blog on the list (was Youth, our greatest natural resource)? I renamed it "Pass the Torch".

Thanks!

You know, Matt, we may want to skip Temlyn this round. She said she was really busy and was okay if we went around her. Then the Nav could direct to your site and you could continue. If we ever finish this round, we'll have to revisit what works and what doesn't.

Hey there--it's me, Julia (Temlyn). I know I said on Friday that I couldn't get to blog over the weekend, but I'll be getting my entry up either today or tomorrow (we've got some bad storms moving through, so whenever the lightning isn't bad).

I know Matt said he was a few days late when he posted on Wednesday (Sunday was when he said he could have, but didn't), so apparently it's not the worst thing to be a few days late.

So, if you'll still have me on board I'll be getting my post up ASAP! :D

Sounds great! We'll look forward to your post. Round three has just been really disjointed, partly because I juggled the list.

(Thunking forehead with heel of hand)

Oh and there was the matter of losing 6 weeks of posts.

And all the Yanks are playing with fireworks.

But we'll get the jive again and it will be great. I really like this chain.

Hey lookit - my post counter is up again. Somebody found some stuff.

Can someone enlighten me as to what a blog chain is?

Kristen

KellyC

Kristen, we started a chain of bloggers where one blogger would write a post about the post of the previous blogger in the chain, then refer to the next blogger who built on that post, etc. It is a continuous chain until it's complete. We completed two well organized chains that were lots of fun. (Towerkel's doing). Currently on round three. Check out quidscribis' blog (http://www.lmashton.com/)- she's the keeper of the lists;)

They also located some of the lost posts on this thread and I think they're here (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33849): toward the end of the thread.

Could we remake this thread a sticky? And maybe name it AW Blogging chain or something?

Here's the old thread, retrieved from Google:

Towerkel:
Okay, here's the idea I posted in Dawno's Blogosphere thread. She told me to go ahead and start if I like, and I like.

Here's the deal. It's simple. We get a list of AWers who want to be part of the AWChain. The first person writes a blog entry, lets everyone know that their entry is up. The next person on the list has to take some element from the first post and blogs on it. Then the next person takes one element from the previous blog and so on. When we get to the last person on the list, they have to follow procedure by writing about something from the previous blog entry. BUT, they also have to incorporate some element from the very first blog, thus completing the circle.

After the round is over The first person on the list gets dropped to the last position and everyone moves up. The new first person looks at the Last person's blog entry and starts again. And the cycle continues. Confused?

Example;
Here is the player list;

Fred
Wilma
Barney
Betty
Dino

Fred blogs about his day at the beach. One of the things he mentions is the beautiful blue sky. He posts in this thread that his is up, with a link, and the name of the next person on the list, Wimla reads it and blogs about the fabulous cherry vanilla creme flavor of Blue Sky soda. Barney blogs about Cherry blossoms in his yard. Betty blogs about orange blossom being her favorite honey. dino blogs about his favorite activity, munching on honey flavored bones at the beach.

Round ends. List now looks like this;

Wilma
Barney
Betty
Dino
Fred

Wilma starts by going to Dino's blog and picks something out-- she blogs about deboning (bone) a ham. Barney blogs about last year's company picnic, where he hammed it up big for his boss. Betty blogs about her bossy sister's bad habits. Dino blogs about the nun's habit he swiped the other day. Fred blogs about the nun he had in grammar school who refused to eat ham sandwiches. Round ends, everyone moves up one.

Simple, right?

To sign up for round one; simple respond to this thread with "IN" and provide an URL for your blog. Please do so by Thursday, 8PM Eastern. I'd like to get this rolling for the weekend.

Also, if someone wants to join after a round has begun, they'll have to wait until the current round ends, then they will be placed "at the bottom" of the list. ("at the bottom" meaning at the bottom of the first list. So if they join in round 4, they'll be added after Dino)

One thing, try not to copy the previous post. If the post before you is about changing your own oil in your car, don't write about your experience changing your own oil. The point is to see how far out we can go, and then bring it back with the last person. (so, instead of writing about your oil change experience, you could write about the time you overheated oil in a skillet and it caught fire.)

I hope this makes sense. If there needs more clarification, or any questions, feel free to post them here.

Oh, and try to keep to your blogging style, if at all possible. If you normally blog several paragraphs, don't just blog two sentences for this project.

The reason I figured to have people post here when their blog is up is to encourage everyone to read all the blogs. It'll help to know context, and I think it'll just be a lot of fun. And don't forget to comment about posts (on their blogs, not in this thread.)

Towerkel:

We need ground rules for people flaking out or not being able to post. If Barney's appendix bursts, the whole chain stops.

Peggy:
Sounds like fun (and a good way to inspire my blog posting) - I'm in.

http://thoughtsontheroad.blogspot.com

Towerkel:
Well, I figured a round would take a day or two (depending on how many participants), and if you knew you would be home you'd have the courtesy to let us know via this thread. Can also opt out for round(s) if you know you're going on a trip w/o internet access and the like.

Or put in a failsafe-- if after 24 hours the person "up" hasn't responded, they'll be skipped. Won't be any name calling or pointing of fingers, we'll just squeeze them in if they come back before the round ends... I can easily monitor that.

Dawno:
Whoo Hoo! Great stuff Towerkel - and what fast responses to Round One. I'm really looking forward to reading all this.

MadScientistMatt:
I'll join too, using my main blog.

Jen.nifer:
Count me in, too!

KellyC:
I'd love to join in, but can I be assured I'll get gentle reminding when I'm supposed to get off my arse and post?

Towerkel:
As long as you remember to check this thread once we start, you'll be fine. If not, I'll personally send you a PM. How's that for service?

Peggy:
Would it work to have the blogger PM the next person in the chain when their post is posted?

Towerkel:
You tell me.

I'm game for it.

quidscribis:
In!

I think PMing the next person in line once you're done your post is an excellent idea. Especially since I'm also the forgetful type.

chaostitan:
IN!

http://chaostitan.blogspot.com/

KellyC:
LOVE that service! Thanks in advance

http://www.kellycurtis.blogspot.com

Sury:
I am sorry, I forgot to mention the participating blog. It's my writing blog: http://athomewriting.blogspot.com/

TemlynWriting:
I'm leaving to go out of town on Friday, and won't be back until the following Friday/Saturday (June 17). With that in mind, would I be able to participate in this round? I could be toward the end of the list, if there are enough people to last through to when I return.

If so, I'm in. My blog address is http://juliawrites.blogspot.com (http://juliawrites.blogspot.com/)

(I'm in need of more regular updates, anyway.)

Towerkel:
Probably not. I suspect the rounds won't take more than 2-3 days (depending on the final count of participants). But, I'll add you to the list, and when you come back we'll squeeze you in to the current round.

BlueTexas:
Add my vote to the PM'ing idea.

Towerkel:
For the record,

I was never against the PM option, just in the interest of simplicity and to keep everyone informed I decided on the thread option.

I think we should do both, at the very least so that everyone knows who's "up".

And Quid,

I had hoped that the 24 hour window would be enough to keep our around-the-world members in the game. Should it be longer?

3)When your post is up, Report it in this thread with a link (a direct link to the page would be best, if possible) AND PM the next person on the list.

4) The very last person on the list has to take an element from the previous post and somehow link it to something from the very first post of the round, finishing the loop.

On every other screen, I've checked, and they were about 5, it shows up fine. Sometimes a bit dark. But never too dark, so it must be your settings.

I think if someone has their display settings low, like at 256 colors, it might be an issue. I don't know. I can see it pretty well.

An Idea
Here's an idea, don't know if it will work.

Instead of having the same people posting in response to the same people over and over (with only the top batter changing, moving up on the list). Why not shuffle the blogs at the end of each round.

Keep the original line up as a way to know who is on top next.

Example:
(first round)
A
B
C
D
(second round)
B
A
C
D
(third round)
C
A
B
D

Does that make any sense? The top batter would continue to be A, B, C, D on down that original line (and also whoever joins later) but the ones to follow (red) would be shuffled. Of course, there is the problem of figuring out how to shuffle and who would do it (maybe the first person of the next round could just do it at random--hat, eyes closed pointing, whatever) and then write the list here and on their first blog before the next round starts?

I noticed everyone has such unique and interesting styles. It would be fun to respond to someone different each time. Or if you happen to get someone you've had before, fine too.

What do you think?
__________________

Forbidden Snowflake

That sounds like it's about to get very complicated. But it'd make it more interesting, as the order would change.

Yea, I was thinking about it getting complicated too. Especially once more people started joining. It would certainly make people have to pay more attention. And get friendly with more than their immediate before and after bloggers. Hmmm....

How about they always get switched? Like instead of B and then C it'll be first C and then B.. and D and E get switched and so on?

Good idea, have everyone get used to it first. I'm so erratic about reading blogs (there are so MANY). This will teach me discipline! To me that is first and foremost.

Okay, Matt went yesterday, it's Jen.nifer's turn. http://www.jennifersando.com/

KellyC:
Thanks to Jen.nifer for giving me a topic I could write about! Mine's up -- http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/

jen.nifer:
Hehe, glad to hear that - I tried to mention a couple of things; I hoped it wasn't against the rules to blog about something other than chosen element...

KellyC:
I thought your's flowed very nicely - I think the point is to play "telephone" a bit. How does one topic relate to the next, etc etc.

Towerkel:
Jen, you did just fine.

quidscribis:
Kelly let me know she's done, I'm awake now, and I'm off to read and then write my own...

I'm done, and I've PMed chaostitan.

Wendelynn, I checked out your blog and attempted to comment on one of your posts, but can't. I'm not a member of Blogger. Did you know that you can open up your comments to people outside of Blogger and moderate them so no spam or offensive posts get through? I'd love to comment on your blog...

Wendelynn:
Hi Quid,
I thought that I had opened up my blog! Thanks for letting me know. I'll go tend to it right now.

quidscribis:

Thanks, Wendy.

wendy, don't forget. You have the task of tying Chaos' post to mine.

(here's the direct link to my post. http://www.dtkelly.net/?p=96)

Dawno:
I don't know if I'll have the time or talent to do this but I was thinking it would be cool to have a little button in the AWChain blogs that memorializes your participation - and maybe links back to this thread?

I hope you're all adding each other to your blog rolls as well

This has been wonderful and I hope Towerkel's rep pts are rollin' in

Can't wait to see round 2!

KellyC:
I thought this was a great exercise and it gave me a reason to post a blog entry. How do you make a blog roll?

Wendelynn:
The 1st AW Blogger Chain is now complete! Take a look at http://flyingshoes.blogspot.com

Towerkel:
I was fiddling. Is this the kind of thing you were talking about, Dawno?

If so, and someone else feels like making a better one (ie one that isn't crappy) feel free.

Okay, so the first link of the AWchain is completed, time for round two to begin. One rule to be added, but since most of you have done it already it shouldn't be too difficult. In your post, please provide links to the previous post and the next person in the chain, so that anyone following the chain can go either way along the chain without gong back to the AW page.

Don't forget to also PM the next person in line, as well as post on the thread to keep everyone up to date as to where the ball sits, so to speak.

Since TemlynWriting is away, we'll skip her for round two and start with Blue Texas. Kira, don't forget to take something from Wendelynn's blog entry to keep the chain going

Have fun, that's what it's all about.

*Edited because KellyC just reminded me of something I forgot.

KellyC:
I really liked it when there was a link referring to the previous post as well. I actually went through the chain backwards that way.

Hey guys, my technorati rank jumped a ton after that round. I'm not too sure about how that works, but my understanding is that it improves every time someone includes your link within their text, right? If it will help people's rank, I'm willing to post the complete chain, like some of you have. My blog is very narrow, so I'm trying to be careful, but if that is one of the things that improves your rankings, I'll include it.

If it's some other way of linking, please tell me that too. I still haven't figured out tags well enough for them to work when they're supposed to.

Please advise - thanks!

@Towerkel:
I think it's beautiful and not crappy at all But here's mine - oh so much more advanced:

@@@@@@@@@

Now, THAT's crappy!

quidscribis:
KellyC - linking to the other blogs also improves Google page ranking for the other sites. I'm no expert on how it all works, so that's pretty much the extent of the explanation you'll get from me. But yes, it does improve ranking for others. That's why I linked to the entire chain in my blog - I figured it was a nice thing to do. I wouldn't argue if others wanted to do it as well.

And Kelly, I love your chain - it's teh awesomest! :p

Towerkel, wonderful idea, and it worked very well, too, I think. Thanks!

KellyC:
Okay, cool - thanks for the explanation quidscribis (glad you liked my chain too

I will post the full list on my blog.

Also, this makes me think that mixing up the list would be good, because then you would have new people linking to you each time? (Tell me if you think my logic is wrong on this.)

Towerkel:
My only concern with scrambling the list every round is moderating who has had a turn starting and completing a chain link. Last thing I want to do is hurt someone's feelings because member A has been the last link 3 times, and member B hasn't had even one turn.

If this does not matter to anyone, I'll be more than happy to scramble the list, starting with round three.

KellyC:
Good point Towerkel, we'll have to play that by ear, I guess.

Hey guys, I formatted the Aw Chain lists so it indicates the name of the each blog (where I could find one.) You can copy my html if you want, for your posts (I'm feeling very smart!)

This is my attempt at a sidebar button:

I tried to draw a chain along the middle border, but I suck at pixel drawing.

I love both chain buttons, Towerkel and Peggy! I plan to use them both - one with the list that KellyC posted (another big thank you!) and the other down with my 'button collection' further down in the sidebar.

Now, for the html you can put "under" them to make them clickable - do we want it to link back to this thread? I'm going to do that on my blog - if that's what you want and don't know how to do the html, I'll post it in a bit.

eta: ok, here's the html to the button that I've posted above the list of the first blog chain blogs (Towerkel's):

Quote:
<center><a href="http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34458" target="new" title="AW Bloggers have written a blog chain - read it, join it!"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/Ebil_Librarian/awchain.jpg" width="80" height="40" alt="Read the AW Chain!" border="0"></a></center>

Now, I've hosted the picture on my own Photobucket site and I don't think there would be a problem with you hotlinking to it. That said, if you can host your own pictures, just replace the stuff between the <img src=> and </center> html tags with your own host site URL for the button.

The way I've set it up, when you hover your mouse a little popup title appears that says "AW Bloggers have written a blog chain - read it, join it!" You can replace that text with whatever you want to say - just edit between the quotes.

If you don't understand how to do any of it, just post in the Techies thread and one of the more tech savvy amongst us will give you the 411

I was wondering if that was the right thing to do. I'll probably update my template in the next day or two and add the link.

Gillian is on a distinguished road

If there's a round 3 can I join in, please? I am way out of date on *everything* because of an SF convention. I had the best fun time, but this is the first time I have been able to check AW since the Great Shutdown.

My blog is http://gillpolack.livejournal.com

Right now it seems to be mostly recipes.

SF and food are a pretty unholy combination, aren't they?

I designed the medieval feast for Conflux (since in one of my other guises I am a medieval historian) and before I even left the dinner people started demanding the recipes so they could make things at home. For the record, the most requests were for hypocras (alcoholic drink), which says *something* about Australian SF&F writers.

The oddest things give you your blogging moment-in-the-sun - my feastliness gained me a link on a national media site and people keep checking out those recipes.

And in a similar vein, I would like to step out of the next round.

It's been great participating in the first two!

I'd like to chime in that this was a great idea. I've found lots of new interesting blogs to read and it's given me incentive to get off my rear and post!

My entry is up, and MattScientistMatt was PM'd.

Would someone mind helping me out? I'm updating links on my blog and I have the AW Chain on it - if someone would take a look at what I've got up and let me know if I've missed anyone, I'd be most appreciative...I'm getting a bit confuzzled about how this works - is the 2nd chain everyone from the 1st plus the newbies? How do I separate the two chains so they list correctly - or should I?

Thanks!

quidscribis:
Or you can go to my blog where I have all the chains listed...

Round One with permalinks
Round Two with permalinks
Round Three not done yet, so permalinks not yet possible

Hyperbole:
Thanks Quidscribis - I'll use your links!

quidscribis:
Anytime, hyperbole! It's what they're there for.

You know, I was just reading Forbidden' (http://infinitevanity.livejournal.com/)s (http://infinitevanity.livejournal.com/%29s) and JudiS' (http://everythingindian.blogspot.com/2006/06/aw-chain-round-2.html)s (http://everythingindian.blogspot.com/2006/06/aw-chain-round-2.html%29s) blog entries and see that neither of you link to each other. I think even though you're addressing different subject from two different chains, you should at least mention the other blog as the first in the next chain or final in the last chain. That way you benefit from two links, like the rest of us.

I'm sorry I didn't figure that out earlier - I think someone asked. Sometimes logic escapes me....

Towerkel had this all figured out already. Guess that's why there are rules

Oh, you mean linking Chain 1 ender to Chain 2 beginning, Chain 2 ending to Chain 3 beginning, and so on? Good idea.

Um, that is what you mean, right?

Yes, quid - that's what I mean. Towerkel suggested we even tie the content from the last to the first, but we got all out of whack with the switcheroo (sorry). Just going back to add the link without connecting the content would at least keep the chain going without breaks. Theoretically it could be an infinite chain.

Also, I'm wondering if the first post in Round 2 got two links then. I'm not sure.

Just bugs to work out as we continue.

Okay, glad to know I did understand.

I think what I'll do then, as well, is link to Chain 1 from Chain 2 and so on and so forth within my own blog. To provide silly little links all over the place for anyone to track as they will.

But not right now. I'm actually working on a proposal...

Judi - the list you quoted is the round 3 list - we juggled it, which has caused confusion, I think. So you followed Southern last round, but this next round is all different (Although I see you're at the bottom again!) The juggle wasn't very scientific. If you'd rather be elsewhere in the chain, we can move you.

Everyone needs to take a look at the round three list so you have an idea when you're up. Also, please make sure you PM the next blogger, or round 3 will finish around Thanksgiving

My list might be odd because it's just html - I wrote it for people that wanted to cut and paste the list into their blog. I fyou'd rather have the hyperlinks for every list in the univers, Quid's got you covered at Peregrinas

Thanks for keeping this going.

FWIW, I envisioned each round being a link in the chain. so the last post of round two would tie into the previous post and the first post of that round. Then the first post of round three would tie into the last post of round two, this connecting the 'links'. and so on. You're doing fine.

I'm updating my template to include readers' favorite posts, etc, and would like to have an AW blogroll on it, but one that doesn't take 20 inches of my front page;) Anyone have a complete blogroll, with html, that scrolls or links to someplace invisible?

We could even use the AW Chain graphic -- that someone smart created -- then link that to a complete (and ever-growing) list in a post on our site. I think it links back here somewhere now, but that don't think that helps us with Technorati, etc. If we all put the complete blogroll somewhere in an old post (or a scrolling one on the first page), we'd all get the benefit each others' link, without even trying.

I'd prefer html that uses the blog name, rather than the AW name, and I could rewrite it if someone just has the rest of the html.

Thanks!

L M Ashton
07-05-2006, 07:23 PM
Anyone have a complete blogroll, with html, that scrolls or links to someplace invisible? Kelly, I'm confused. What do you mean by linking to someplace invisible?

If we all put the complete blogroll somewhere in an old post (or a scrolling one on the first page), we'd all get the benefit each others' link, without even trying.Absolutely! I have all three chains linked on my blog for just that reason. It would be great if everyone in the chain did the same thing. :)

I'd prefer html that uses the blog name, rather than the AW name, and I could rewrite it if someone just has the rest of the html.I'm confused again. :) Are you asking for the html code for the three blogrolls? If that's what you mean, I can provide it easily - it's on my blog.

KellyC
07-05-2006, 07:36 PM
Surely by now, Quid, you know that I don't always know what I'm asking for;)

"Invisible" - I mean in a post somewhere that isn't necessarily on the first page. The chain graphic would link to it. This way it doesn't fill up the front page, but you can still get the list by clicking on the graphic - and we still get the benefit of the linking. This way, more people might be willing to put the blogroll on their site because it's completely easy and doesn't mess anything up. And we ALL benefit when we ALL list the blogroll. I know this for sure.

A scrolling blogroll, on the other hand, would make a listing less obtrusive and it could be more easily featured on a front page.

"HTML" - yes I would like your html, but I need the actual garbage-looking stuff with all the code, not the pretty stuff we see on your blog. So I need the code.

But I'm thinking I'd like to have everybody's links, not just the chains. My blog's focus is pretty narrow, so I don't talk a lot about chain, etc, but I still want everyone to get a link from me.

Does it look like I know what I want yet?

L M Ashton
07-06-2006, 05:09 AM
Ah, you mean deep linking - not linking to the main page, but to a page within the site from a page within the site. Actually, from what I've read, that's better for Google ranking anyway.

The code -that's easy, and no problem. I'll just copy and paste it. :)

But you say you want everybody's links, not just the chains, so that sounds like you're asking for an already assembled AW blogroll - a blogroll for anyone/everyone at AW who has a blog. Is that what you mean? At one point, we had one post that had all that at one point, but I'm willing to bet it's swallowed up in the great void. :( If I remember :) I'll look around and see if I can find it and let you know.

I put the whole AW chain blogroll (anyone who's participated) on my sidebar and I just let one title run to the next, which took up a lot less space. I still would like to have a small graphic that points to this list within a post somewhere, but am not that smart;)

And I think it would be great to include more people on the general AW blogroll, but think there has to be some kind of organization so that everyone who gets a link, gives a link as well.

You can see what mine looks like here. (http://www.kellycurtis.blogspot.com)

Julia, not trying to be a huge pain in the butt or anything, but do you think you'll be able to post your entry today or should we skip you and move on? Sorry guys. I've truly been meaning to post, but my mind hasn't been all there to do so. Instead I'm pretty focused on some medical tests I'm going through (ongoing for several weeks). I had intended to write about a recent get together where I went out to a eat at a Korean restaurant with some Chinese friends, based on Matt's Korean-oriented post. Or about spending time with my Asian friends during our choir trip in Chicago. That was fun. Anyway, I thought I could write something creative and fun in time to participate, but my mind has been preoccupied, stressing about these tests.

Go ahead without me. Maybe I can jump back in the next round. Sorry.

I'll do a general blog update soon (hopefully tomorrow), anyway.

Well done all! We've finished Round 3! Now I would suggest everyone read through the entire chain to see where it went. Besides going around the world, it seems we've covered every subject known to monkeys.

By the way, an easy way to visit everyone on the chain is to go backwards. Start with Simran and click through - most people have permanent links for the previous posts, but not the post posts.

KellyC
07-24-2006, 03:55 PM
I'm an educator, so I feel the need to evaluate the way the chain is going. I'd like your comments too.

Here are my observations:

1. Great posts, awesome participants, interesting chain, worth being read.
2. Real links within posts - helps with rankings.
3. Chain takes a long time to complete (may not be a problem).
4. Not many comments are being shared for the number of participants (I appreciated all of you who commented on mine - thank you! But I was early in the chain.)
5. Not everyone is using the Technorati tag "AW Chain", which may or may not have any purpose.
6. There are other game formats that are effective - the Meme, where you get "tagged" without a list, or a carnival or game where everyone posts at the same time (See my Thursday Thirteen entry (http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/2006/07/thirteen-reasons-we-love-grandmas.html)for ideas on this).

I'm not sure I want to change the format of the AW Chain. Think I like it this way, but thought we should discuss it before launching into a fourth. This chain took nearly a month to complete. Any thoughts out there before we continue?

L M Ashton
07-24-2006, 04:44 PM
Kelly, great comments.

I'm working my way through the chain now and plan to leave comments on all the blogs. I will also be posting the completed chain with permalinks on my blog as well - better links for all the bloggers. I would appreciate it if everyone did the same, and I'm pretty sure most everyone would also appreciate that, as well. Linking to specific pages improves page rank. It's a good way for each of us to give back and help each other.

AW Chain technorati tag - I forgot. :) I'm like that - I forget things. I also appreciate reminders, so thank you. :)

A month is a bit of a long time. I don't think it's necessary to complete the chain in a matter of days, but this one was a bit longer than I think is useful - I think we lost steam somewhere near the beginning. Of course, it didn't help that AW was down for a few days or so and we lost all sorts of posts, and it looked to me like posting lagged (in general, at least in all the forums I visited) after AW was restored the second time. I think that contributed.

I'd like to hear other people's thoughts as well. :)

KellyC
07-24-2006, 04:50 PM
Excellent comments Laurie. I like reminders too;) If you happen to be crawling through all that html for permalinks, would you mind putting the code here so we can add it easily? That would be fantabulous and I'll add it to my AW chain post.

Also, great info about the fact that permalinks are more useful than general links. Thank you for helping us to understand the intricacies of the blogosphere.

There were a couple of blogs that I couldn't comment on because commenting was limited to members of that community. Those communities, as far as I know, allow anonymous posting from outside of the community. I don't know, but they may also have settings where you can require captcha (those funny graphic letters to verify you're an actual human and not a spam bot) to cut down on spammers. I would love to comment on all the blogs, but those restrictions mean that I, and others, can't without joining that comunity. Personally, I have no desire to be a member of those communities. I don't keep a blog there, so to me, it's pointless. Others probably feel the same.

You might like it perfectly fine the way it is, and that's fine. I'm posting this to make sure you are aware that there are options, even though they may not be immediately obvious.

In this round, there were 15 participants (I hope I didn't miss anyone. If I did, PLEASE let me know and I'll correct the chains I've posted). In going through the blogs, I noticed that there seemed to be 3-6 people posting comments on the posts in the chain, and usually the same people.

Think about this, please. You have a blog, and you want people to read it and comment on it. That's why you're here, right? That, and to have some fun. Well, everyone else also wants people to read their blogs and comment on them. Please give back to the others who've posted in the chain by reading their entries and commenting. We all (or at least most) appreciate knowing that we're not just talking to ourselves. We like hearing from people. So, please, comment.

I also noticed that perhaps 1/3-1/2 had posted the entire AW chain in their blogs. Again, it would be helpful - for technorati rank, for Google page ranking, for other search engine rankings - if every single one of us posted the entire AW chain in our blogs. It's another easy way of giving back. :)

I agree with you Laurie on not wanting to join all these communities either, but I even found that - and maybe it's just server problems, but several in the same blogger system that I'm in wouldn't take me to the comment page at all. Sorry to those I haven't left a comment for in that case. I'll try again and for the others I haven't finished reading yet as well.

Finally, I was able to add the AW chain to my blog. It kept coming up all weird. Now it's all set and posted for all to see. :)

Hi Laurie -

I really don't know. I was hoping someone else would have brilliant ideas to get us rolling again. I won't have anymore brilliant ideas until September. It's on my calendar - the day the kids go back to school;)

I'll keep checking back to see what's up. Until then, I can keep adding people to the blogroll (http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36536). The links there aren't as good as the chain though - they're not permalinks and they're not within posts (like Teddy's or the chain), but they are something and they are exponential in that we all post them. so we gain each time someone joins.

The links there aren't as good as the chain though - they're not permalinks and they're not within posts (like Teddy's or the chain), but they are something and they are exponential in that we all post them. They definitely are something.

They increase our Google and other search engine rankings.

While deep linking is better, don't for a moment think that that means these are not worthwhile. They are. :)

We could try a different type of chain. There's a slightly old thread we could resurrect to get ideas from... http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33849

It's possible that this particular idea has run its course for the moment. We can try something else if we like and return to this one later if we like.

But I'd still like to hear from more than just us who've discussed it so far. Not that we aren't the wisest and the fairest, of course... :tongue

Um, hence the link to the other thread. :) http://absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33849 Yeah, that one. :) </facetious> Okay, seriously, shall I formally resurrect that thread and see if we can pick people's brains?

hehehe. I love smilies;)

Yes, there were some great ideas in that thread. I guess I'm feeling like the idea of this chain is really great, and it's flexible - so everyone can participate with their own topic. I'm just not sure the format is efficient enough - we have to depend upon each other too much. The carnival-type format is simpler, and depending upon how you do it, it can be deep-linking as well.

So I'm thinking we could continue the chain, but more in a "you've been tagged" format (like Dawno's Monday meme). Then we could add a carnival with a chosen theme every once in a while. If it's a theme you can write about, join! Different people host the theme each week, month, or whatever.

My two cents.

ChaosTitan
07-28-2006, 05:14 PM
I've never done a carnival, and I'm not quite sure how one works. But I'd like to continue with the Blog Chain in whatever format we choose.

I'm not sure why some folks are unhappy with the way we've been doing it. Sure, round three took a month. But fifteen people participated, and allowing 1-2 days per person to get the PM, read the previous post, and write their own entry...that roughs up to about a month. ::shrug::

KellyC
07-28-2006, 05:47 PM
chaostitan - thanks for chiming in on this.

That's why I initially started the discussion - I wanted to hear what people thought. If most chain participants are happy with the way this works, then we should continue in the same format. But because more would like to join in, I think it's important to discuss it and make some rules, etc. Otherwise it's just going to take longer.

We need to hear from more people, otherwise we can only guess what everyone's thinking. What about a poll??

Our choices could be:
1. Keep the chain the way it is, let it get longer with more participants and don't worry about how long it takes.
2. Keep the chain in theory, but have one person tag the next, without a predetermined order. You could actually have several chains going at once this way. We'd need a check and balance to make sure everyone was getting tagged (sounds like 3rd grade;))
3. Organize a carnival of some sort so everyone who wants to join can, on a specified day, with a predetermined theme. (Them and host would change each time.) Here's an example of a travel carnival (http://advisor.triphub.com/2006/07/travel_carnival.html)I participated in. We could also format it like the Wordless Wednesday (http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/2006/07/our-six-mile-bike-trip.html)or Thursday Thirteen (http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/2006/07/thirteen-ways-to-show-fami_115392698982639198.html) games.

Thoughts? Please add ideas - Maybe people would speak up more if we used a poll

L M Ashton
07-28-2006, 06:31 PM
Good point, chaostitan. I guess, to me it seemed to drag because the previous two chains were so very very quick in comparison.

I'm not worried by how long it takes - I like the chain as is. I especially like the jumbling we had between last round and this, so we can link to new blogs each time.

I organise a carnival (the Australian Speculative Fiction Carnival) and they are only as good as the subject matter. We need a very clear topic with particular interest for a carnival to work.

PS Sorry about the typos earlier - I have a winter virus and it is playing merry havoc with almost everything I do.

Wendelynn

I thought when the chain was initiated that one of the guidelines was that you had 48 hours to post or be passed by. As the chain grows, naturally it will take longer to complete, but what's the rush anyway? Does it matter if it completes in 1 week or takes 2? It's the journey, isn't it and not the destination that counts?

Anyway, I think the chain is cool. I do think everyone should post links to the entire chain in their posts. I like having the chain scrambled each time, gives me a new brain to figure out how to work with.

The carnival idea is good too, but being topic restrictive there probably will be many times when someone prefers not to participate. Why not have a carnival and the chain? Theyare two different animals as I see it.

It looks to me like the choice is to have both - a chain that takes however long it takes, as well as a carnival that still needs some kind of organizing.

I'm up for both. I'm just kind of maxed out on organizing things until my kids are back in school. But count me in!

OKay, that was really, really weird. I went to edit the post to reflect the additional participants in chain 4, then I was returned back to the thread, but that post was gone (without me ever clicking on delete), so I went to a cached copy of the thread I had open, clicked on edit there, it brought me to edit - with the changes I'd entered before the post was deleted - so I clicked on save, and it was restored.

Bizarro.

And no, I'm not on drugs.

Honestly.

Bk, if you read from the beginning of the thread, you'll get the gist of this in more detail.

The general idea is that the first person writes an entry, then links to the second. The second writes an entry, taking an element from the first as their theme, includes links to the entry before and after. And so on.

We also include a list of all the blogs in the chain and also go through and comment on the entries as well.

I'm guessing a link to the first blog will be posted here when it starts is that right?Yep. And we're going in order of sign-up, so I start things off. I, as the first in the chain, also have to connect the theme from my entry to the theme from the last entry in the last chain. The last entry in this chain needs to connect the theme in her/his blog to the entry before his and the first entry in this chain.

As soon as my entry is done, I post the permalink to the entry here, I PM the next person in line, and I post the next person's link on my blog entry so that readers can follow the chain.

I've also provided links to every participant's userID so that we can PM the next person in the chain once our entry is done. :D See? Not just a pretty face... :)

We request that everyone post a blog entry with the links to all the blogs at the beginning of the chain, and then once the chain is done, repost the list with permalinks included.

As well, when you write up your entry, link to the entry before yours (with permalinks) and link to the entry that follows yours. That way, it really does form a chain.

I hope I haven't confuzzled anyone... Let me know if I have, eh?

Also, if I neglect to add anyone to the list, please let me know. :D

Simran

err...what's a permalink?

When do we start I'm eager to get going.

L M Ashton
08-09-2006, 07:57 AM
Judi - not necessarily. We still have one person who's not on the list because s/he didn't provide a blog address that was valid, and there may still be more signups. :)

PenDragon - permalink=permanent link. So my blog addy is http://www.lmashton.com but a specific blog entry within my blog has a permalink of, for example, http://www.lmashton.com/2006/08/547 You would still find that specific entry by going through the http://www.lmashton.com link right now because it's still on the main page, but after it drops off the main page, you need to know where to find it, hence permalinks.

Clear as mud? :)

When do we start... How's tomorrow? My time zone, of course, since I'm starting... What does everyone think? Are we likely to get more joining us? Or, if more people want to join, do we want to just tack them on at the end of the list even if we've already started?

When you write your entry, please remember to include the permalink to the entry before yours and a link to the blog after yours in your entry. Then anyone can follow the chain through the links if they so chose.

Also please include the technorati tag at the end of that entry. It's as follows:

<a href="http://technorati.com/tag/awchain" rel="tag">awchain</a>

Please also include a list of all blogs in the chain in your blog - whether that entry or another entry or in a sidebar, it matters not. The html code for that is as follows:

<a href="http://www.lmashton.com">Peregrinas</a><br />
<a href="http://www.kellycurtis.blogspot.com/">Pass the Torch</a><br />
<a href="http://thoughtsontheroad.blogspot.com/">The Road Less Travelled</a><br />

<a href="http://www.foggybrain.blogspot.com/">Midnight Muse</a><br />
<a href="http://kappanohe.blogspot.com/">Kappa no He</a>

After you write your entry, please remember to post the permanent link, aka permalink, here and also PM the next person in the chain to let them know they're up.

When the chain is done, I'll post the complete chain with permalinks for every entry, and I'll even provide the html code for you to post that code on your blog. Because yes, I'm that anal. :D

Please also go through the chain and comment on everyone else's entries. You know how much you want comments and traffic. Guess what? So does everyone else. ;) For that matter, read and comment on other entries in those blogs as well. You might find some hidden gems in there. :)

If I've made any errors in posting links or in the html code, please let me know.

And most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Cath

Ok - I'm new to this, so forgive the silly question. I'm posting this list in an entry now - do I technorati tag this entry too?

L M Ashton
08-10-2006, 03:03 PM
Why not? As in, yes, please. :)

By posting these lists of links, you and everyone else who posts it is helping to improve the search rankings and technorati rankings of everyone on the list, which is what we all want.

Thanks, Quidscribis :) I'm gonna head over to my blog later this morning and post all these links, and read up on technorati ratings (my brain cells have dust on them today).

But my evil little mind is already working on ideas for the next poor sap . . . I mean, blogger, to follow up with :D

Kudos people.

I just wanted to mention that you're doing a fantastic job of commenting so far on this chain. It's feeling much more like I hoped it would feel.

Of course, Laurie did start us off on an oh-so-excellent topic. Easily commented upon.

Anyway, keep up the great work - all the way through the chain. I think we'll keep our momentum that way as well.

BK - I hope you get it figured out. I don't know anything about live spaces, so I can't help! Sorry

Laurie - here's my permalink: http://kellycurtis.blogspot.com/2006/08/making-world-better-place.html

I think we should each update our posts with the permalink as the posts go up. Otherwise, people get lost in the chain (unless you go backwards at the very end of the process).

Bk, anytime you have a problem like that, give us a link so we don't have to go digging through old posts and someone will take a look and help you out. :)

I've just finished breakfast, I see there are a lot of comments on my blog, but I haven't read anything yet, so I'll get myself caught up.

Kelly, you mean updating our blog post with the permalink, right? Yeah, that's a great idea and I completely agree.

Kelly, you mean updating our blog post with the permalink, right? Yeah, that's a great idea and I completely agree.

Yes, I mean when the next person in the chain posts, the previous one should change their general link to the permalink. This way, three days later (or three months) we can still just go from one post to the next, without any scrolling.

L M Ashton

Hey bk - when you leave comments, your id isn't linkable. It's a great way to generate traffic, so you should look into this. I don't know how to make it happen with your platform, but just so you know, it's a good thing to do.

KellyC
08-12-2006, 03:30 AM
asorum (and Forbidden Snowflake and whoever else has asked) - I think several folks asked to join this chain during the last chain as well. But until we get the kinks worked out here, I think you need to subscribe to this thread, watch the progression of the current chain and when someone posts a "call for participants", respond right away.

We're so darn social here that your request will be buried 4 pages deep by the time we start #5. Or maybe there's a way to start a cumulative list so the requests don't get lost?

ALTERNATIVELY: someone could host Chain #5 (just like Quidscribis did) and ask for participants now - people that aren't in Chain #4. There's no reason there can't be more than one chain going on at the same time.

Just a thought. I hate for anyone to not feel included. I really love this chain. It's been fantastic every time. There's just a lot of demand for it, so maybe more chains would be a solution? Thoughts?

L M Ashton
08-12-2006, 02:23 PM
Forbidden, it wasn't a matter of kicking you out. We did a call and took everyone who responded. :( Sorry.

Kelly, I agree - I see no reason why there can't be two threads going. There certainly seems to be enough interest.

But. This thread is getting long, and as you said, it's easy for things to get buried in here. I almost put AW Chain #4 as a new thread, but hesitated, so it's in here instead. If I were to do this again, I think I would do a separate thread simply because a. the thread is getting long, so it's easy for things to get lost b. each chain can have its own set of rules if we like c. it's hard to tell what's going on when everything is in one thread.

What do y'all think?

Sury

Separate threads for each new chain sounds good to me.

Excellent thought Quid!

And Forbidden - that's why I addressed the issue, because I didn't want anyone to feel like they were left out. No reason we can't have a bunch of these going. But someone from the new chain needs to take the lead. (nudge nudge, wink wink)

Thanks, Quid. The waters seem to be receding. Although there wasn't any flood threat in Dry Delhi, we are dependent on other states (some of which were flood affected) for our electricity. The past few days saw highly erratic power supply in the capital.

Bk_30, I'm trying to leave a comment, but your system only allows people who are signed in to leave a comment. So far, I've spent ten minutes trying to do that (going on the theory that since I have an MSN Messenger account that it will allow me to use that, being a MS site and all - although I could be wrong) and not having a whole lot of luck. Do you have any options that allow non-signed up people to leave comments?

Bk_30
08-19-2006, 09:13 PM
I don't know why it's not letting you post. my site has always been open to anyone and when I check the settings it says it still set to allow all to post.
Every since they "fixed it" there have been nothing but problems. And yes as long as you have a netpassport or msn messenger it should allow you to sign in <shrug>

Bk_30
08-19-2006, 10:16 PM
I double checked my settings just to be sure. My permissions are still set to everyone, this "not allowing you to post with out being signed in" is one of the new features apparently, msn forcing everyone to "upgrade" their messengers and so forth to the new Live. I think I need to go blog space shopping. :(
