I'd like to start something participatory - not a contest, but something fun that would have all of us AW Bloggers doing something together and commenting on each other's blogs around the 'event' - with the group we have here it would go around the world! If we figured out a way to keep track of it (I know some of you haven't had great success with Technorati tagging) that might add to the ease of keeping up with what the rest of us are doing.

Any ideas?

Great idea. Yes excellent idea. I am waiting eagerly for it to happen. Yes, it will help all of us to improve our technorati ranking. No wonder, you are the moderator. Thanks again, for this.

Well, World Literacy Day is September 8. We're all authors, what about a short essay/rant/poem whatever strikes the bloggers fancy about what it means to be literate or illiterate in today's world.

I't's a great idea James and I'd be more than pleased to put something up on the AW Calendar and *try* to remember to start a thread in advance (say August 1) so we all have time to get an essay ready.

Between now and then, however... :)

We're talking about more than just a meme, right? And nothing too technical - though I can't think of a better way to connect us all than Technorati.

Do we want to pick a cause like James (fantastic idea!) mentioned, or something fun, similar to the Zombi Penguin tour? Or a new SOS push?

I don't know how it would work with the differences in the way people blog--

but what if we got a list of participants, and the first person started with a "normal" blog post. That person comes to the appropriate thread, says that they've posted, the next person on the list goes and reads the blog, and picks something from the blog and writes about it. They publish their blog (with appropriate tagback to the post they got the 'idea' from) and then post in the AW thread, then the next person does the same, and so on, and so on.

The blogs can be about anything;

ex. Let's say my blog entry is the first. And I happen to blog on many fairly unrelated things (it could happen, :D), like Play Doh, Smurfs, Bubonic Plague and Irish Spring. *Ahem* The next person could pick anything from the blog post and write something, either along the same line or completely different. Maybe the person after me just happens to be good friends with someone who contracted Bubonic plague after camping in the southwest US. They write about that. Then the next person comes along and posts about how they once visited baseball's Spring training in the Arizona, and the next posts about the joys of spring, and the next on how Joy really does work wonders on dishes! and (HELP! ME!)...

Hmm..
Just had another thought. What if, then, the final person not only uses a theme from the previous blog, but also has to tie it in to the first one as well. Then the "round" would end. The person who posted first (in the example provided, me) will go to the bottom of the page, the previous number #2 become number one and everyone else moves up on the ladder. Anyone wishing to be added will be put either randomly places or specifically placed at the top or bottom.

Make sense to anyone else but me?

The AW Mobius strip. There's the tag. My work here is done, people. :D

And yes, I'm really tired. Can you tell I've been up chasing a three year old since 5 am?

I like Towerkel's idea, too. Simple, cohesive, plenty of ways for us to distort and be creative!

I write a food blog and "events" are fairly popular with food bloggers. The way it goes there is this: you are given a theme for every new event and have to post recipes and experiences based on that. These events are rotational in nature, which means there's a new host for each edition. Once all participating bloggers have posted on their blogs and have notified the host blogger with their permalink, the host posts a round-up in their blog. It's one of the best ways to connect with fellow bloggers. Often, it also leads you to blogs you have never seen before.

Think we could do something similar? We pick a topic--it could be anything--Summer, Editing Woes, AW Addiction...

Then, all participants write a post on the topic in their blog and the host blogger gives a concise round-up in his or her blog with links to the individual bloggers.

Just an idea. I am very enthused with the idea of an AW bloggers event. Thanks for coming up with it, Dawno! :)

I noticed some good ideas mentioned here. I thought I would add one to the list. It's most likely something to think about in the future rather than for this particular topic.

What about setting up a blog carnival? It's basically what Sury has described. The organizer chooses the host and subject for that month and notifies them in advance. Then, that person hosts the carnival and everyone who wishes to be involved submits their work. The host includes their submissions (along with their own thoughts about the subject) in a single article with their links.

Yeah, I love doing blog carnivals. Have you checked out the 'tastes of the darkness' thread? Tastes... is my own blog carnival of horror flash fiction. I've also hosted the first edition of the carnival of socialism on May 1 and they've been decent experiences.

Pass it Forward

Or what about a "pass it forward" effort? Jenna talked about random acts of kindness on her blog, which is what made me think of this for our virtual event. I'm not very good at the technical part of all this, but I envision something like:

1. one person does a random act of kindness (could be donating to a charity, picking flowers for your neighbor, or writing a sincere, nice comment on the blog of someone you don't know, etc...)

2. She or he would write a blog entry about the random act of kindness, with an established paragraph explaining to everyone else what it's all about;

3. Then that person would "tag" someone else that's agreed to do this (we could even comment on their blog with "you're it").

I don't really know all the logistics, but I like the idea. I'm in on whatever else is agreed upon also, but I have a pretty narrowly focused blog.

Edit 1 -- OH!! And we could create a "Random Acts of Kindness" tag (if there isnot one already) and tell anyone who participates to put it on their post???

Edit 2 -- I checked, there is one, and a blog with a bazillion ideas for random acts of kindness http://www.daretobeanangel.com/index.php

This is all great stuff - perhaps we can try them all - not all at once! :)

Sometime next week I'll post the first event. You folk are the best!

Bunch of really cool ideas, and I'm definitely game to try any of them. The Blog Carnival is not something I'd heard of before, but that does sound cool too.

OK, for our first event, what should be the goal? Do we want to get as many people involved as possible or are we looking to strengthen the community we're building here of AW Bloggers - that would help me with setting up the parameters.

I am thinking along the lines of Towerkel's idea for our first one. Then we can try the blog carnival next.

Holding James' idea about the literacy day, too - that has a lot of promise and is a great theme for writers, no?

Towerkel's idea seems like a good bet. It's a simple, but enjoyable way to start off.

It will degrade into filth and terrible jokes, though. Just watch. I have a feeling. :)

Kelly, does it surprise you that I love your idea? Random acts of kindness across the blogosphere sounds fun!

Maybe we can have an "event" every month so we can use all these cool ideas. :)

Kinda what I was thinking, Jenna - but that will depend on the ideas being generated by participants here. I've decided to delegate that part :)
