What restrictions were there on taking household pets (cats, dogs) from the UK to the US and back in the 1930s? Would there be some kind of medical inspection or would they have to go into quarantine?
I don't know about America, but In the UK you needed to put your, cat/dog, in quarantine for six months, when entering the country . It has only recently been relaxed , You now need your pet to be given a pet Passport from a vet .
The main issue would be with bringing the animal from the USA to the UK, because of the risk of rabies. Before the UK introduced the "Pet Passport" scheme in the early 2000s (animals can now enter the UK if they are certified as fully vaccinated), you would have to keep your pet in quarantine at an approved facility for 6 months. This could be very expensive and stressful for the animal (it was relatively common for animals to die in quarantine), so it was a major barrier to bringing animals from other countries to the UK.
As the pet passport has been mentioned I can't help but give you a bit of amusing trivia.
The UK has a history of "joke" candidates standing at elections - we have a party called the "Monster Raving Looney Party" (whose founder was known as Screaming Lord Such) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Monster_Raving_Loony_Party , and they actually have "policies" and one of thier policies was - passports for pets!
