My next series is going to be set in a low-magic fantasy setting, inspired by (not based on) Victorian London.

Now, there are various differences that prevent a full parallel (for one thing, paganism has endured as a major religion), but I would still like to find a good source of general knowledge about that time and place. Nothing specific, just this and that I can add in as flavour and detail; cuisine, everyday technology, clothing, entertainment, living arrangements... you get the drift.

Any suggestions?

There are several books out there that might help with this-- What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew by Daniel Pool and Daily Life in Victorian England by Sally Mitchell are good starting points to get a flavor of the era. They can direct your research into specific areas, but don't rely on them as your sole source of facts. London 1808-1870: The Infernal Wen by Francis Sheppard is also worth a look.

When in Victorian England? The period ranges from the very beginnings of train travel to electricity and telegraphs. Social mores, technology, philosophy and daily life details varied widely within that time period.

What Ultragotha said -- there's an enormous difference in almost every detail of life & society between the 1830s, the 1860s, the 1880s, the 1900s. It was an enormously dynamic period, studded with transformational changes in any aspect you can think of.

That said, journals, magazines & newspapers are a great way to get the feel of a particular moment. So are novels that have a contemporary setting.

General-purpose books like What Jane Austen Ate... gloss over a lot of the changes and tend to be better as surveys than detail resources (scholars & specialists tend to pick them apart because they're such easy targets) -- but they're a place to start.

How to Be a Victorian by Ruth Goodman is an excellent resource of that sort. She's a historian AND a re-creationist, and she knows her stuff.

There is a series I think on Netflix about random things that could kill you in the Victorian home, that might add some nice details.

I was thinking circa 60's, 70's.
