Some Amazon sellers use algorithms which automatically price their books at a slightly higher interval than those of rival sellers. So if you have two sellers using a similar algorithm on a single title, the price of their used copies can escalate to a ridiculously high price. It happens. The books don't usually sell at those high prices.

That's a side effect of Amazon's bots, who, coupled with Amazon's proprietary algorithm, search for books elsewhere and adjust the price accordingly. Since it's proprietary and Amazon does not disclose their methodology, it's hard to tell whether the inflated price is caused by rarity, by price comparison, or by what are essentially competing bot hordes.

This is not unusual or even new; it's old news.
