Although this technique might have been taught to me in an Improv Theater coarse, it works very well with giving me a jumpstart on writing something.
Even though what you are writing may have nothing to do with the story, it is a great way to get some words flowing.
It is called (at least what the teacher called it) was Alphabetical conversation. This exercise is usually done between two or more individuals to help facilitate conversation. Picking a random letter, "B", the first person starts the conversation with a line that starts with "B", the next person uses "C" and it goes on and on until you get back to your original starting point.
As far as the writing exercise goes, it is the same concept. You first sentence should start with whichever letter and make your way back around to it. It's a really fun way to start jogging the writing monkey in your head, plus it is a might difficult to string a story together in that fashion! Let me know if this technique works for you guys because it helps me out immensely.
Peace.
