So, here's the story;

My brother recently got geckos. My brother is a good few years younger than me, and does not write books or think about names very often. BUT I am aware that when you name a pet, re-naming it is tricky because everyone forget's it's name if you re-name it often. Ergo I'm urging my brother to pick really good names and he can't think of any. So I thought why not ask all the writers I know who have to think of names on a regular basis.

So...anyone got any suggestions? My brother likes video games, animals and in general is a wee bit of a nerd type.

Please these geckos are the closest things I'm going to get to nieces/nephews in a long time I want them to have decent names.

Mostly inside my own head.
To say the truth... if I ever had reptiles of any kind, I would probably name them after the ASOIAF/GoT dragons: Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal.

If you seek original names--whenever I think of names, if has to be somehow tied to a backstory, and the world I am writing in. Therefore it is a bit difficult for me to make them out of thin air. What do you want to convey with those names? Danger? Cuteness?

Damn, I am taking this too far. Good luck, though.

"Denise" and "Denephew" come to mind. :)

How many geckos are we talking about?

Yeah seriously, how many geckos? That information is crucial when coming up with a goofy -- I mean dignified naming convention.

If it's two, I suggest Yoshi and Lickitung.

Nigel and Dinsdale are the first names that come to mind.

Do not ask me why this is.
You don't have the time for me to explain it.

Two geckos...and we don't know the genders cause they're too young :/

But 'Denise' and 'denephew' made me laugh way way WAAAAYYY too much.

Totally gonna try and persuade him on that now.

I suppose "Geico" is too obvious?

Dragon/wyrm/drake names are popular in reptile circles, as I understand it, though I've never found geckos to look particularly dragonlike compared to some lizards.

Dinosaur names, perhaps, or paleontologist names?

If he's a nerd, how about Latin names?

For video games, maybe name them after gaming systems or computers - Atari, Commodore, Nintendo, Timex if you're reaching far enough back (or Babbage or Antikythera, for real classics) - or his favorite franchises.

Dragon names might be a good bet. Someone above mention GoT names, which I love despite the fact I don't read/watch GoT.

But as for the gaming consoles...he knows a few of them, but he's only 14.

I would go for Geico myself. You don't suppose they will give you a discount for that, do you?

Oh, no! :(

Hope you can get them to a reptile vet... could just be stress from being in a new home? (I know nothing about reptiles that don't spit fire, unfortunately...)

We think its the stress. Strange though...I have no idea why they're adapting so badly.

This is why I stick to snakes. Snakes are easy to care for.

Are the geckos okay? And do you have names yet?

If not, I suggest Gordon and Professor Scalesworth.

Alas they had to be taken back to the shop because they didn't eat at all.

But, we shall be getting more geckos soon! And gordon seems to be popular so I think I'll suggest that.
