I ran across this one contest that sounds fun. The only problem is the deadline is on the 30th.

They say it's a $18 entry fee.

$1,500 for the best story and $1,500 for the best essay.

It also says $100 for 10 honorable mentions.

If you're interested I saw the contest at winningwriters.com.

I thought about entering it myself, but I don't understand why you have to pay to enter a contest. Is that normal?

Some legit contests charge fees. Some scam ones don't (but try to get money out of you later).
Good article here (http://www.victoriastrauss.com/advice/contests/)by Victoria Strauss on how to evaluate contests.
