We were off for about 90 minutes, while we fixed a corrupted database table.

I want to thank those of you who saw the maintenance announcement and logged off instead of manically laughing and refreshing ;)

Remember, you can follow @absolutewrite on Twitter.

Thanks for everything you guys do to keep the site up and running. Us beginner writers are indebted to you!! :e2flowers

Ditto.

I logged off as soon as the notice appeared (managed to save what I was working on) and stayed off till this morning -then to my delight I saw you were back, earlier than anticipated. :hooray:

Jason

Uh sorry...I'll admit to being one of the ones that refreshed (though not while laughing maniacally). I was on my smart phone at the time and the notice was off-screen. When nothing loaded after a few refreshes I tried on a computer and that's when I saw the notice and meeped quietly out.

:(

But, like others have said, tks for all you do to keep the forums up and running here - continually learning so much every day! :)

Thanks!

Head tilted back at more than a 25 degree angle during laughter.

Thanks for being awesome, y'all.

Thanks for being awesome, y'all.

So if I just laughed at your comment with only a 20 degree tilt, I'm good?

So if I just laughed at your comment with only a 20 degree tilt, I'm good?

Yep, that's within the acceptable range for laughter without hitting the "maniacal" qualifier.

Wait, you could hear that? :gone:

I didn't see an announcement but then, it was 2:a.m. Any maniacal laughing was due to insomnia and the George Knap/ David Paulides interview I had to resort to in my distress! I thought you all went MISSING 411!--s6

*Sigh*

Server problem in the wee hours this AM. I'll be watching today, but the hamsters know I try to sleep at night . . .

Maryn
02-02-2017, 06:19 PM
Well, there's your problem. Sleeping at night is for losers! Be like me and stay up coughing and watching Law & Order on cable. The hamsters won't know what to do.

Pesky hamsters.

Thank you for your hard work.

All I got was a lagging connection and then one of those Problems connecting windows. I figured it was due to maintenance or updates or something so I moved on.

We were down for about 90 minutes or so while some emergency database negotiations took place.

We're back, but dang, the hamsters hate working on a snow day.

Yesterday evening (2/28/2017) the server kept crashing. I checked on that website /isitdownforeveryoneorjustme, and the forums were down. Might've been a glitch

The server didn't crash; we were one of many sites affected by the Amazon outage (http://www.theverge.com/2017/2/28/14765042/amazon-s3-outage-causing-trouble) yesterday.

We were offline for a few hours.

This is what happens when I sleep; the hamsters go crazy.

We're back now, and sorry for the outage.

Hey, AW's back!

*gives AW all the hugs*

I had to do the unthinkable and actually be productive for the last few hours. *shudders*

Thanks for getting it all up and running again, AW Admin. You're a superstar.

Hamsters again?

lol one time....i took my car in to a repair shop cuz the breaks were acting weird. the mechanic couldn't find anything wrong and then tried to suggest that maybe the rats were chewing on the wires.

so maybe it's rats...chewing on the wires here....that makes the forum blink offline for a brief period? hahahahahahahahah

Maryn

We've lost landline phone service multiple times due to squirrels breaking into the junction box. I guess insulation on wires is tasty. I find it amazing that they use junction boxes made of something squirrels can gnaw through, though.

Maybe we need to up our hamster-proofing game, or find the best ways to bribe them.

In all honesty, this was essentially a badly behaved neighbor at the same time a bot herd tried to register thousands of new accounts.

It was too much and Apache (the actual Web server) said I ain't agonna and you can't make me, and lay down and died.

Total time wasn't really even two hours, but it took me a bit to get a decent connection, and that was probably due to weather here.

Thank you. :)

Sorry about that; out about 90 minutes. Someone at the host flipped the wrong switch.

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

When my family lived in southern Arizona, my dad's employer once flew him to Minneapolis first class--the only available seat--to troubleshoot some client's huge computer, back in the days when a drive was the size of a large vending machine. It was not a direct flight. On arrival, he went directly there even though it was around eight at night. Several high-level people had been trying to figure out what else they could try since early that morning and were waiting for him.

He plugged it in. The custodian had apparently caught the cord while cleaning and not realized it. Dad got to stay in a nice hotel, have dinner there, and fly back first class.

Kind of reminded me of the "flip the wrong switch" story.

Sleep is good; sleep is necessary. Most of us do it on a fairly regular basis and I'm glad to see you were givin' it a shot, Lisa. Don't let the hamsters put you off the practice. :Hug2:

Sorry folks. We are fighting a ginormous horde of would-be Chinese spammers.

They bogged down and choked the server for a little over an hour.

Naturally, I decided to go for a walk today. We're back, but it's going to be sluggish while I sort and block IPs.

Thank you for valiantly fighting off the spamming hordes! We appreciate your efforts. When I try to get on and can't, I assume you are struggling against some similar assault.

Guys this is going to take a while; I'm blocking entire ranges of IPs from China and Taiwan, but new ones are popping up. So we're going to be slow for a while.

Jason

Screw that Lisa, take another walk and enjoy the flowers. :)

It it means the rest of us will...oh I dunno...

maybe write something other than a forum post?!?? Lol

Nice pics btw

Sorry folks; we'll be upgrading the server asap.

It gets overwhelmed by bot hoardes who are attempting to register large amounts of accounts.

Jason

Figures...

As the old saying goes: No good deed (Absolute Write) goes unpunished (bot hoardes).

We'll have to just grimace our way through it. Thanks for all you do and apologies for well...all you do.

Thanks Jason; one thing members can do that will help is if you refer someone to AW, tell them to use your Username in the referral field; it speeds up the process a lot.
