I love how Ray Bradbury spoke about making a list of nouns that helped him get in touch with not only his fears, but his story ideas. So what would your nouns be? Here's mine:
the dark
basements
boneyards
carnies
drowning
heights
snakes
death
revelations

Did you know that "insanity" spelled backwards is "ytinasni"? Scary thought, uh?

Other personal buzzwords are:

clowns
closet
demons
drowning
voices
caverns

I'm scared of the following: ghosts, crazy people, demons, Satan, mice, rats, touching a fish, frogs, snakes, the unknown, badgers, lions, spiders, quicksand, hornets, wasps, bees, car wrecks, lizards, salamanders, big dogs, geckos, ferrets, pirahnas (I actually caught one, hence my fear of touching a fish), and that's about it I guess.

I forgot to mention slugs.

What scares me? When I become the character in my story (and he/she is a sociopath or psychopath) and I have a hard time getting back to real life. Only kidding. Maybe. :D

Okay, here's my list:
Tornadoes (and I don't live anywhere near tornado alley).
Lights going out when I'm in the basement. Our basement has crawl spaces and nooks and an old bathroom and those ancient hanging light bulbs.... You get the picture.
Someone tailgating when I'm going ten miles above the speed limit.
A family member getting suddenly very ill.

  • Power outages in the middle of winter (like 40C below)
  • Deadly pandemics, where death is everywhere and there's nothing anyone can do about it
  • Something bad happening to my children
  • A stranger coming into my home in the middle of the night

dying and leaving my kids.

Large, venomous snakes - but I still hunt for them, so it's not a phobia. Hunt for - for curiosity sake - not to kill.

Attics and basements.

Car accidents - but not phobic.

Flying - but I mostly overcame my fear - still - I'd prefer not to.

Enormously out of my budget bills - for phone, cell phone, electricity, etc.

;) I'm terrified of tarantulas and tornadoes and live where there are both. I had to laugh at Blue Texas including Fundamentalism! I agree wholeheartedly (got those here, too). I am a strong Christian and was once told that that wasn't possible if I wrote 'Horror'.

I started a blog on this, taking a moment to explore my fears a little deeper in hopes of touching something I can put down on paper that will have people curling up their toes. So far I've got basements and churches, but my list is expanding to include spiders and murder (at my own hands). Stranger things come to mind but not that really hit my h-spot.

You can't be Christian and write horror? That's absurd. See why I included Fundamentalism, lol?

I just googled Canyon to see where it was, and I bet you have it worse than I do - looks like a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. *sigh* I hope we both make it through storm season, and come up with fantastic story ideas!

Completely sideways, man
stalkers
drums (loud drums give me weird panic attacks)
sirens
stairways (I still run up the stairs to this day in my parents' house if it's nighttime)
silence

spiders (tarantulas are the worst, but any critter with 8 legs will have me running the other way)
aquariums (not the at home kind with only a betta...I've got one of those in fact, but the kind you visit and pay admission for. Heck, I've even had a panic attack when I was in this maze of aquariums at a pet store).
walking into a cobweb (bad enough I look like an idiot flailing my arms around, but do I have to scream too?)
