A character in one of my stories gets severely whipped on his back, to the point of losing consciousness. Afterward, his wounds are dressed. Because he is a prisoner, he is restrained to the bed in the infirmary. Would he be placed on his stomach or his back? What kind of restraints would be used to prevent escape, considering that this story takes place in modern day?

Modern day but where?

If it is desired that he be able to sleep and that the injuries heal, then they would lock and guard the door and not use restraints. But if they wanted to use restraints as punishment and help to encourage healing, then he probably would be put on his stomach, and mesh straps to the ankles and wrists would be likely. And if they wanted to punish further and to Hell with healing, then they would strap him on his back, so that any motion might irritate the welts.
