Could they have travelled by land? There is mostly land between England and India and travelling by sea means going around continents. Railways were starting to boom by the 1850s. I did a quick google search on this and found this article http://www.nytimes.com/books/first/m/marshall-east.html - it looks like the kind of info you're after, including travel times and postal times, and info about the development of railways etc.

Thanks, Neandermagnon! I did see that when I was originally researching, but it didn't have the precise info I needed. I ended up finding the answer, though, so I am all good!
