Would a cemetery for an Islamic community be notably different from the average cemetery in the United States? Quickly noticeable contrasts with what I would be used to? Like grave designs, existence of family tombs, level of grounds upkeep, that sort of stuff?

I also read something about no casket. How commonly is that adhered to outside of the Middle East?

I used to work as a funeral escort in Ohio.

Ohio does not require an outer burial container (vault) or a casket. The wrapped body would be transported in a reusable metal casket that had the stereotypical angled sides (narrow at the feet, broad at the shoulders, etc). There was one funeral home in Central Ohio that catered to Islamic families. I think they had three or four of those caskets.

This link will take you to a guide for Islamic families in Columbus. Looks like I may have been mistaken about the vault. At any rate, I know the people at Rutherford, and they'll be happy to answer questions. The same funeral home also caters to the Buddhist community in the area. http://www.noorohio.org/funeral-arrangements-0

Local laws aside...

I'm married to a Muslim, and we've discussed burials. Here's what he's told me. The basic gist is that yes, they are wrapped in cloth before being put in the ground. No casket, no lead liner, no embalming. Just wrapped in cloth. And they don't do headstones at all or anything to mark where the body is buried.

Here in Durham NC, a board is placed over the cloth-wrapped body because shoveling dirt directly into somebody's face is deemed rude and disrespectful. Another thing I noticed is that there is very little parking. I asked a Muslim funeral director why (as part of a cover story on a new local Muslim cemetery), and he said that there are no elaborate funeral services in the house of worship or the grave site. Relatives don't fly in from overseas or anything like that. Instead, a couple of staff members and the deceased's closest relatives say a few prayers and then proceed with the burial.
