When someone likes your post, they click on the little scales icon (below someone's details on the left of a post) and type a message. You get to see the message in your user CP. I don't think there is a direct way to reply, but you can pm someone or send them a rep point back. Each rep message is a rep point, though you start with 10 IIRC.
Hope that makes sense :).

Some people can also see a phrase that's associated with how many rep points a person has, by hovering their cursor in the general area between the word Posts: ### and above the icons for whether that person is online, giving them a rep point, or contacting a mod about an inappropriate post. (I've never gotten this to work, so I can't be more specific. Some people say it's hovering just below the letter P.)

Anyway, the reputation levels are:
User is infamous around these parts: -999999
User isn't playing nicely with others: -30
User has shown some questionable behavior: -10
User is an unknown quantity at this point: 0
User is on a distinguished road: 10
User is well-respected: 50
User has a spectacular aura: 80
User is a shiny, shiny jewel: 125
User is a glorious beacon of light: 175
User is a splendid one to behold: 250
User has earned our admiration: 300
User leaves trails of profuse coolness: 400
User should run for President: 500
User has a golden reputation: 600
User has a double-platinum reputation: 700
User is better than ice cream with hot fudge: 800
User is a candidate for sainthood: 900
User is so great that we've run out of appropriate compliments: 1000

Yes that does - thank you muchly, very helpful.

What are the points for? Do we use them? Flaunt them? What's the point of the points? (no cute pun intended)

Wow. It's taken me forever to just reach the 300 mark today. I can't imagine how wonderful a person's posts must be on a consistently high basis to achieve 1000.

As far as what the points are used for, we trade them amongst ourselves for small kitchen appliances.

I have 1191. I'm trying to find the place to redeem points. I want one of those AW Foot Massage Units everybody's been talking about.

I have more than you, Kevin. :wag:

It's not a popularity contest, Miss Thing! (Oh, wait...maybe it is?) Continue.

Kevin, didn't you get most of your rep points in that bonking thread you started?

No, Miss Thing, I did not. I received most of them for my humour and poetry. Thank you very much. (Geesh! Trying to disqualify my rep!) I do admit that the bonk thread was absolutely ingenius, and that a lot of people had fun creating brilliant songs based on the bonk...but that is not where I received the bulk of my rep points. Thanks, though.

Well, Kevin, I freely admit that I got a lot of mine from begging, singing, making dancing banana jokes, and of course a few lewd remarks as well.

I love my points and the people who give them.

How many times they've lifted me out of the dregs of a bad day with a kind word.

Bazillions.
Priceless.

Me, too, Unique. I'm like Sally Fields when she gave that "OMG, you people actually like me" speech, right down to the astonishment.

Some people here are very generous with their compliments. You all know who you are--thanks!

Maryn, grateful
