I'm in a bit of a reflective mood this evening. I get this way around this time of year. Fall back into times when I was happiest (or saddest) all for the sake of nostalgia.
I read somewhere once (forget where) that to move into the future you have to embrace your past. Whether this is just mumbo-jumbo or not, I like to take that ride once in awhile.
While doing this, it got me thinkin'...what happened to all the Drive-In Movie theatres? There's been a-many nice summer evenings where I felt like going to one. There used to be a few around the city. Now the closest is about an hour and a half away in a farmer's field like in Field of Dreams. The projector flashing a cornucopia of colours off of a four storey white canvas in the middle of the night. FM radios tuned to just the right frequency bringing everything into focus. The silly attempts to make a bad movie better by tuning into another channel (talk, preferably) to see if anything matches or creates a psychotropic mish-mash akin to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz. The cool smell of motor oil, and dirt, and popcorn, and fresh cut grass. The feeling as if the show is just for you as you sit in your car with your loved one (for those who actually watch the movie in times like that ) with the stars opened up above.
I sometimes think it would be a good idea to open one up closer to the city. Revive the hey-day of the drive-in. I wasn't born the last time it happened. I wasn't even a twinkle in my parents eyes. I wonder if I built one, would people come? Or is it all just wishful thinking?
In short, I miss a lot of things. Tonight, it's drive-ins.
What do you miss?
