I had an idea for a sci-fi thriller but it had an erotic premise. I wrote it out but it didn't pass my self-imposed test of would I show it to my family.
Of course, I don'tneed them to know about it. I am left wondering what is now acceptable in mainstream sci-fi? The erotica is essential since it motivates the protoganist to co-operate with the enemies' plot.

Any thoughts?

It's tricky to know. There's a lot of crossover. Have you considered what beta readers might say, and are you considering trying to get a literary agent?

Added: in many cases, family is the last audience you should write for. I love my kin. I only share work and writing news with the other writer in my family, who gets me.
