Anyone going to be watching this tonight? I'm off out this evening, so won't be able to join in with any comments here, but if there are any Brits watching, please raise a glass on my behalf when Graham mentions Terry. :e2drunk:

Enjoy the songs (and don't forget to take a shot each time the host country are congratulated for putting on a great show)! :greenie

Oh it's a shame you won't be here to join in! But I will raise a glass for you, no worries!

Thanks, mirandashell (I was hoping you were going to be around!). :Hug2: (I'm recording the show and will look forward to reading all the comments here afterwards.) :)

We're getting the final on basic cable for the first time in the US. It used to be only available on satellite or smaller niche networks, but Logo's picked it up. I checked the program listings and they've blocked it at four hours. *sigh* Hope I bought enough cashews.

Hey Ben, good to see you here if this is your first go.

Ok, rules are: we comment as we listen. Jokes are very welcome but usual standards of 'don't be a jackass' apply.

Most important rule? Every time someone mentions Terry Wogan, take a drink. Everytime there's a big drum, take a drink. Everytime there's a wind machine, take a drink. And during the voting, everytime someone congratulates the host on a great show, take a drink.

Anyone who survives the whole show wins the admiration of the rest of us!

BenPanced

This will be my first time seeing it live. Back in 2007, a LiveJournal friend from Australia burned DVDs of the 2nd Semi and the Final for me, so I got to see Scootch. :tongue And in 2001, I went to San Francisco's Pride Festival and saw Dana International perform, making her the first (only?) Eurovision winner I've seen live.

mirandashell

Me too! Me too! Me too!

Hi, OSG. I haven't seen any of the semis this year. I did record them but didn't get around to watching them. So tonight will be all new to me.

onesecondglance
05-14-2016, 10:56 PM

BenPanced

Okay. They're overriding Graham Norton here in the US. I'm pissed.

mirandashell
05-14-2016, 11:04 PM
Ok ... so... what the heck is this with the costumes? :D

BenPanced
05-14-2016, 11:04 PM
THEY NEED TO STFU! SERIOUSLY! I CAN'T HEAR THE ANNOUNCER CALLING OUT THE COUNTRY'S NAMES!

mirandashell
05-14-2016, 11:06 PM
Ermmm... don't worry Ben. You will get to see the country name loads of times! Are you watching the British broadcast or are the station doing their own?

mirandashell
05-14-2016, 11:08 PM
Oh brilliant! Love these two! She's is amazing at quick changes. I think she had about six different dresses last time.

BenPanced
05-14-2016, 11:08 PM
I'm watching on Logo. The gay network so they have to have gay hosts making bitchy gay comments about the hair and costumes.

BenPanced
05-14-2016, 11:09 PM
Wow. It's a shame nobody in the audience likes her. (*snark*)

mirandashell
05-14-2016, 11:09 PM
Ah! We have Graham Norton who is also gay but not so bitchy! :D

You just got a mention! Well, not you personally obviously......

Ooh Country and Western! And the first cheesy grin to the camera for tonight.

I quite like this. Very Garth Brooks.

Following the eco theme because I think they look like they were constructed from heavy, ugly wood.

mirandashell
05-14-2016, 11:37 PM
Well that was.... dull.

Israel up next. Another ballad.....

Wow. That is some serious hair. It must take hours!

I must say though, the lighting has been amazing so far.

BenPanced
05-14-2016, 11:39 PM
But the acrobats add...an adjective.

Is it Israel's turn to do the "stars/rainbow/sunshine/unicorns/happiness" themed ballad?

mirandashell
05-14-2016, 11:41 PM
Yup! There's at least 3 every year.

Bulgaria! I think this might be the first time they have got through.

Well, I'm chair bopping!

BenPanced
05-14-2016, 11:43 PM

BenPanced
05-15-2016, 12:49 AM
Jesus. The US announcers are confused because the Austrian singer is singing in French. SOMEBODY NEEDS TO READ THE FECKIN' RULESBOOK! Or bone up on Eurovision history before agreeing to the hosting gig.

We still won't win though.

I wouldn't change the station if it came up on the radio, but it doesn't really do that much of anything for me.

Graham just said it won't be in Australia next year even if they win! Shame!

Yeah, the half-time show was the bomb!

Yeah, the US commentators just mentioned they'll have to hook up with a European nation.

So where will they go if Australia win?

Is the half-time show on par with the awesomeness of Riverdance?

Ooh, this is tense music!

Crossed with BenPanced.

Aw, we were doing so well until the public score, lol.

Even better than Riverdance.

Some HYOOOOGE jumps with the public scores!

If Australia win they should hold it in Sweden.

And yes, it is comparable with Riverdance once you get past Justin Timberlank.

Russia third.

Fuck me that was tense! They should keep this voting system. Way better than the old one.

How the hell did the UK popular vote give 12 points to Donny Mantell? WTF?

Well, thank you everyone for the company in another Eurovision. See you in Kiev!

Hopefully I'll be able to join in properly again next year! (I've enjoyed reading your comments - now I just have to match them up with the entries when I watch the songs. :greenie)

UKRAAIIINEE WOOOOO

That telephone voting section was intense, so much fun. Very interesting political implications of this win though, will be interesting to see how things pan out. I hope they find a way for LGBTQIA+ fans to safely be able to attend the show next year.

I've been enjoying reading the comments here as the contest progressed. (couldn't join in, sadly, phone gets wonky when I try to log onto fora.) So many thanks for the hilarious commentary! :)

Shame to see Australia beaten at the very end, it was my favourite.

There were a few others who didn't care for the US commentators. Over on Logo's Facebook page, some of the words used to describe the duo, Carson Kressley in particular, were "vapid", "shallow", "not funny", "disrespectful", and "ignorant".

Maybe next year they will take it more seriously and get proper commentators.

BenPanced
05-18-2016, 03:49 AM
Or we'll get more of the same since Logo promoted it as the "campiest" music event of the year. Granted, it is pretty camp in sections but the depths the commentators sank was beyond belief.

We don't get the Graham Norton commentary. Our hosts are Julia Zemiro and Sam Pang, who take Eurovision every bit as seriously as it deserves but are rarely (if ever) mean about it.

I looked up Sergey Lazarev, the Russian performer, on YouTube and out of the five I sampled, including You Are The Only One, Russia's entry?

Four were in English.

Dang it. I wanted to hear You Are The Only One in Russian.

But here's the second dress rehearsal that gives you a taste of how the production was put together. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH8zOVvwlm4)
