He's up for re-election, and is in danger of losing to the NC Attorney General running against him, so this seems like a hail-Mary pass to the state party base.

This latest kerfuffle has drawn attention away from Governor McCrory's record of environmental pollution. He ran Duke Energy for 28 years before becoming governor, and when Duke energy was found to be pumping toxic sludge into the Dan River, (by environmental investigators) McCrorys administration did all they could to both cover it up and to avoid sanctioning Duke Energy in any meaningful way.

He is really an all-around fine fellow.
