I have a story about a girl who finds out that she the man she is with is actually married.

I'm just getting started with the story, but I want her to get revenge. I dont mean cheat on him in return, but more of a baiting him into accidentally proving to everyone what he has done.

I am open to ideas on this, or others. I want her to be mean-ish, but not so much that the reader (probably a housewife) could relate to it.

Thoughts, and do be evil....

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahaha.... (LOL)

First define 'with'. How long have they been together? How did she never notice that he was married? If he's abandoned the first wife, never sees her, there are no kids, and the marriage 'ended' years ago, yeah, I'd question why he never actually got that divorce, but it's not in the same category as him going on weekly 'business trips' so he can touch base with a woman thinks of him as a loving husband, and their children, whom he takes an active part in raising.
But, if he's vanishing weekly, and can't take calls when he's out of town, why wasn't she a little suspicious from the start?

She doesn't exactly sound as if she's on an even keel. Of course, that might be the intent.

Personally? I would play a string of practical jokes on the bloke, each one more elaborate than the one before, until the results of said pranks are downright publicly embarrassing. Like replacing his shampoo with Nair, and so on. I don't know if that'd move your plot along, but that's what I'd do personally ;)

Revenge for what? Because he didn't tell her he was married? Rather weak motivation, if you ask me. You'll have to build that up to make it seem like she's not just over-reacting IMO.

Really? The protagonist is seriously betrayed by someone she loved and trusted and that's a "weak motivation" to which she's "over-reacting"?

That wasn't the question.

By all means help the OP with the original question: but don't criticise her plot or story. That's not what this room is for.

We're meant to be providing suggestions for "baiting [the cheating husband] into accidentally proving to everyone what he has done". I am not sure how to achieve this: but if I come up with anything I'll let you know. Good luck with your story.

Does our heroine find out who the wife is? Can she make her acquaintance? Can she enlist the wife into her plans?

(Two guys are walking down the street, and one of them says, "Uh-oh, here come my wife and my mistress, and they're talking to each other!" and the other guy says, "Funny, I was about to say the same thing....")

What's the payoff for the revenge? Making the man look ridiculous, as in, turning up in the middle of Fifth Avenue at high noon, wearing nothing but his heart-patterned boxers? Alter the invitation to a major corporate dinner party with a major client so he thinks it's a costume party, and he arrives dressed as d'Artagnan?

If the payoff is The Wife Figures It Out, there are easier ways to clue her in than a series of pranks.

I presume we aren't going the horror/thriller bunny-boiling route.

Is it possible to make him think he's got some horrible STD? Make his dick turn orange with blue tiger-stripes? I can see some comic possibilities as he runs around trying to get it cured before he has to go back home to his wife.

An awful lot depends on the character of your characters. The "revenge" needs to grow organically from them. (If it doesn't, what you have is a joke book, not a story.)

I agree with others that a string of practical jokes is the way to go, escalating until he's definitely getting some public humiliation from it. The tiger stripe STD was particularly good lol.

Check out out the movie The Other Woman, ota a similar situation but involving three women rather than just two (the scumbag!) but you might get some good ideas on how to orchestrate it and over how long before the big reveal. But the jokes should be more your ideas.

Margaret Atwood's nonfic book 'Payback' includes a section on ingenious and gore-free revenges...the ones I remember at present were calling the police to report that the ex had a dead body at her house but was in denial so the police would need a search warrant (I think there might be variations on the police call that could expose his irregular domestic arrangements), and hiding frozen shrimp in the ex's curtain rods where they'd stink to high heaven but be very hard to find...

Befriend his wife. Even if she doesn't tell the wife about the infidelity, think of the havoc she could wreak-- the husband coming home and finding his wife having coffee with her "new friend".

Post pictures of the two of you on Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat, Tumblr and anything else the wife might read. Though it kind of depends on your story, since maybe the wife knows and doesn't care. Revenge porn is also starting to be criminalized in some areas.

Of course, there are the basics. Stand in his yard at 2 am and scream about your affair to all the neighbors, key your name into his car, show up in skimpy attire at his workplace, jump into bed with his best friend...

Listen to any Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift or Miranda Lambert song and you have a million more ideas.

So the Lorena Bobbit tactic is not on the table?

Are you looking for an escalating series of actions on her part, or one big blow-up-the-world climactic event?
