I wanted to give a little caution for those who feed their dog or cat an exclusive fish based diet. My mastiff Prowl is being treated for a urinary problem. While it isn't a UTI per se, no bacteria, she had a high alkaline count and crystals in her urine and was going excessively. She was eating a dry fish based food that I would add water to. I've switched her to a beef food and she is almost done with her medication and her urination has decreased substantially.

Years ago I had a cat who had to eat fish, it was moist food, because of food allergies. He had the same problem, excessive urination, crystals in the urine and high alkaline count.

None of my other pets have had this problem, regardless of how much fish they ate, so I'm assuming it's just a hit or miss thing depending on the animal.

Just wanted to pass this along in case anyone has a pet on a fish based diet and they notice them starting to show signs of UTI without bacteria being present in the sample.
