This may not be the right place for this but I thought I'd give it a go.

I know that a 'plot bunny' is an idea for a plot that won't leave you alone until you write it.

But..... is there a term for when a group of people watch an MTS drama over several episodes and start writing their own plots from the clues? For instance, watching something like The Killing and people coming up with plot developments to explain why their choice is the killer.

I was going to look on TVTropes but I could be lost for hours in there.......

Assuming you're talking about people outside the show theorizing about the show, maybe Epileptic Trees is what you're looking for? Something similar to that.

Ah, I shall check that out.

The group of people I'm talking about are fans of the show all talking to each other on a message board.

Epileptic Tree is probably the closest I saw. Except that the theories aren't quite that wild because the show is based in reality rather than a Mind Screw. But yeah, it's pretty close.

That's fanwanking.

It's called "being under the influence". Better not go driving.

That's fanwanking.

Beg pardon?

No, I just looked up fanwanking and it's not that. It's more people projecting their ideas of who the killer is and writing future plots.

I'm serious!

Sheesh, just because you live in a box, naked, nestled amongst thousands, everyone thinks you're a perv.

Sounds like (alternative universe/what if) fanfics or fan theories to me...?

Unless they're just using the source as inspiration for original story mysteries?

Fan theory is probably the best description. It's for what you might call 'uncompleted' work in that the fans haven't seen it all yet.

It's happening on the POV board where there's a lot of theories flying around about the killer in Happy Valley.

I dunno what you looked at to find a def., but that's fanwank (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanWank)?

Many of the fan theories which make their way into Fanfic (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Fanfic) seek to "fix (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FixFic)" something the writer believes to be wrong with the source. The fans usually put a lot more thought into this than the show's writers ever did (though show writers have gotten a lot more attentive in recent years, primarily because of the growth of this kind of fan activity)....

Particular common triggers for fan wank include:...

What exactly happened (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Continuation) after the show ended (see Firefly (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/Firefly) and My So-Called Life (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Series/MySoCalledLife)).

I mean you may just be talking about fanfic, but once people are basically revising what was written or shown and then going forward, that's fanwank as I understand it.

Yeah, fan theorizing sounds about it. Making up theories for weekly episodes to try figuring out what'll happen and such is pretty popular.

Yeah, sounds like typical fan-theories (or fanon) to me.

Lots of entertainment (that have some kind of mystery or mysterious backstory, etc) has fans that do that. (Examples: The PC/mobile game series of Five Nights of Freddy have lots of fans making all sorts of theories about what happened to the kids and the general timeline of events in the games, etc. Harper's Island was a tv slasher mystery-ish show that also had lots of people theorizing about the killer based on clues in each episode as the show goes on.)

No, they aren't revising, they are theorising about something they haven't seen yet.

Sounds that way. I was just wondering if there was a funky/comedic name for it.

I agree that may be fan theory. Or it can be movie theory/cartoon theory/video game theory, depending on the source materials. Or you can even go so far as to call it conspiracy theory, if the theory is that insane :evil
