"Genocide is not appropriate
dinner conversation,"
she said on the breeze
of a French 75.

He agreed with her in principle
but countered on the grounds
that a lot of chicken dinners
were being served for a Tuesday.

She was unmoved and
they settled at a stalemate:

she, sipping her suspicions;
he, thinking chicken sounded good.

This gave me a smile. I've had dinners like this (and I suspect all couples have) -- a conversational stalemate that consists of one person tepidly sort-of superficially agreeing for the sake of peace and changing the subject, while the other suspects that no agreement has actually been reached, but keeps her mouth shut about it.

I hope the chicken was delicious.

ha - this feels like an overhead-conversation from the next table over. Made me smile, too!
