I'm quite close to querying my first book, (MG fantasy). I will be pitching it as having 'series potential' yet the narrative of the book has a strong hint at a sequel (prequel).

I'm just wondering if an agent would expect a second book to be complete before committing or would she merely agree to rep it as a stand alone if she thought this was viable? (if she loved the book, obviously) As although I've began to outline, I've not written a second book yet.

thanks in advance !

It's fairly customary to query the first in a potential series as stand alone with series potential before completing the next books. Having an outline of the next book wouldn't be a bad idea, in case the agent asks for it. But the conventional wisdom is not to spend time working on book two if you aren't even sure someone will acquire and publish book one.

Good luck!
