I was reading the Writer's Handbook 2006 which listed a number of US Agents. Some of them said that they accepted the first 3 chapters, covering letter etc. However, when I went to those agents' websites, their submission guidelines asked only for a query letter/email and mentioned nothing about submitting the first 3 chapters, only the first ten pages of the manuscript via email in some instances.
Which one should I go by? Let's supposing I didn't have access to the internet and only read the Writer's Handbook - wouldn't I, if I did what it said in there, simply be following the guidelines that were set out in print? Or would I have been expected to have made all efforts to access their website as well? Does one surpass/ invalidate the other?
